Common Dangers in Playa del Carmen

Whatever we say about actual everyday life here compared to the concerns, fears, and even hysteria, of others reading various reports or even gossip, will probably never make a difference to those with fixed opinions.

Having lived here for 4 years, here's a list of what really can happen on a normal daily basis.
It may seem flippant to some, but it's reality. While we're having fun, it's a genuine list.

1. You're in danger of relaxing and having a good time.

2. Sunburn.

3. Putting on weight.

4. Paying too much for a taxi ride.

5. Stubbing a toe, or twisting an ankle, on uneven pavements or hidden rocks in the water.

6. Hangovers.

7. Somebody might offer you drugs in the street. You say 'no' and continue on your way.

8. Getting dirty feet.

9. Getting a speeding fine.

10. Stomach ache/bug.

11. You learn that the drivers here are terrible and to be very cautious of them while on foot or driving. Watch out for cyclists on the 10th Avenue bike lane.

12. You forget your common sense (dark alleys, avoiding unsavoury types, leaving things unattended or easily available for pick pockets, etc).

13. Mosquitos, bzzzz!

14. Long queues in the bank.

15. Hot sauce - oh blimey.

You see, it's a war zone here.

I didn't realize it had gotten so bad! I think I might have to cancel my next trip. I can't afford to put on any more weight!

I'd like to add one, if I may:

13: Getting charged too much, not getting correct change. Paying is USD instead of pesos. (75 percent or more of our transactions here have included "mistakes"...) Double and triple check your bill and the change you get back.

on a less serious side: Drinking too much Anejo!

Don't forget the critters, David. Mosquitos are running rampant in my home at present. They're even hiding in my closet and toilet.

yeah i cut my toe on a sidewalk, i wasnt paying attention to where i was walking...but seriously, i've walked around after dark with my baby-though i didnt wander too far-felt very safe.
The mosquitoes are fast, small....and bite more than once. Not like the big guys in Canada that will carry you away. But nothing some off and afterbite lotion doesnt fix.

14. The sand from the beach gets stuck everywhere! In your shoes, on your body, on your living room floor, in the bathroom, in your bag.

15. You get yelled at by your friends at home when complaining that the water is slightly too cold.

16. The sun is too bright some days, might be in connection to #6.

It's a hard life..

Don't forget getting laughed at for wearing a sweatshirt and long jeans when all the tourists are in swimsuits.
