Problems

I will be in Playa in April with my family and have been wondering if there has been any problems with the all the drug cartels. In other words my wife wants to know if it will be safe to travel.

You'll be fine. There have been many threads on this issue. I'll try and find one.

As long as you're wife isn't planning on buying or selling drugs, or associating with people who buy and sell drugs you guys should be fine. If you were asking about going to Matamoros or Juarez that would be different. The really horrible violence and drug crimes are mostly in US/Mexico border towns. Search this site and forum for all the info you need and dont worry about drug violence in Playa.

It's as safe if not more so than Disneyland.

I have no clue as to where you live, but here in Milwaukee.....the bad guys are trying to break some old records dealing with killing people.....annually...and we might break it again....
Cancun/Playa del Carmen/ Tulum....well their numbers annually are a lot lower than here.....so, what numbers/situations are you looking for....?
Don't go shopping for heroin/cocaine/marijuana....etc.....and the bad things that come with those kind of sales won't happen to you .....Ok? Do we need to review these lessons again? Thanks, I think not! Via con Dios!

The only thing we have noticed is the stepped up beach patrols by the military. They gave a young Mexican man a thorough "pat down" and searched his bag right in front of us the other day.

when my wife and I were down in the area last week, we noticed more checkpoints by various levels of authority on 307, but not anywhere near the point of being overbearing

to what degree the increased check points and patrols are needed or merited by actual illegal activities is hard to say, but I got the distinct feeling that it's mostly a case of showing the flag to reassure the flighty tourists who may not have perspective
