map directory discussion
Please discuss the map directory in this thread.
We understand that our custom base map needs revision already (some streets need adding and others need to be edited in other ways). Things to discuss here? If the map doesn't load for you, please let us know (including your operating system, browser and version please). If you have any questions or comments in general. Search, and other functions are soon to be released. This is a work in progress. Please make sure you are logged in via the forum before going to the directory. This will enable you to add markers to the map for any places we might not already have shown. |

I like it! Nice job, James! I didn't happen to see the Shangri-La Caribe listed. Maybe I just looked in the wrong place, but if it's not pinned yet, it would be cool to see its exact location, since I'll be staying there soon.
ALso, I know this is a google mapps application, so don't know how much you can control, but it would be great to have a mileage scale available, so you can tell in miles how far it is from one location to another. Overall, it looks great!

Great map! A lot of really good info you can't really get elsewhere. I know these things are very hard to put together but I have a couple of suggestion to make the map a little more user friendly.
First: A search function would be great. There are places that I hear about on the board or elsewhere and they are a little hard to locate on the map. Highlighting over each point can be time consuming. Second: The old directory had blurb about each place listed. That would be cool to see on this. Maybe some contact info or a website link would be nice to have. I know this would be very time consuming as there are many places on the map. Third: Directions would be super nice. If you could put in point A and point B and get directions, distance, etc. Google maps doesn't seem to want to give directions in Playa and it would be nice to have to not get lost and better tell whether a taxi or walking would be better. I'm not sure how feasible this is but it would be very cool. I hate to seem like I am harping on the maps or being to critical because I really think it is great. However, I just thought I should give my two cents on improving it. I'm sure these things would be very difficult to add. Anyway, thanks for putting this up and providing so much great information about Playa. I have never been and I already feel like I know the city and region well. Again thanks so much! |

The directions between two points won't happen any time soon, it's based off of map meta-data that doesn't exist, as far as I know.

How long does it take to get a new marker "reviewed"?
I dropped in the two Sandos resorts and Bad Boys, or Sands is in the wrong place or missing an 'o'. Sooo much better than google maps with the markers all over town in the wrong places .

it's kind of on ice right now as I transition to a system more easily supported... this was based off of a custom map I created and now this is out-of-date already as Google now includes map and Street View data for Playa (which didn't exist when we started this).
Creating and keeping a street map current was too much for me. (to do it for all the zoom levels is quite a task!) |

Great idea but not there yet!
Sounds good, looks good but your techies have some more work to do! I tried to put my coffee shop, 'Coffee Stop' on your map but to no avail! I could not save the info because of an error renaming a pic which needs to be used. The map was empty of markers and I noticed your directory is pretty much out of date too! By the way I've tried to contact you guys with a couple of addresses you gave. I keep getting bounced back. Sorry to be negative but I think it'll be great when you get it right!

I started the map directory in the days when none of the map content providers (Google, MSN, Yahoo!, et al) had map tiles for Playa, so we painstakingly made our own map layers for each zoom level then sliced these maps (huge files!) into map tiles (lots of them!) to cover Playa and other areas. Then Google "shifted" the world about 70m or so (at least in the Playa area) and all the tiles then needed regeneration!
It was a LOT of work. More than I could do, so I got some help, which was also problematic. Then my javascript coding partner went to live in a monastery, and we re-evaluated the direction of development. Then the map companies started to support Playa. We then decided to support some more off-the-shelf tools (read: more professional than what I was making!) which we have up and running on our development server. It's a much better system with a dedicated development team, and it fits within a new open source, off-the-shelf content management system to replace the custom one we are currently using (which I wrote in '04 ! ) As far as contacting us "with a couple of addresses we gave..." don't know what that means. Just use the "contact us" link near the bottom of each page. The emails go to me. As a merchant, join the New Merchant user group here: http://www.playa.info/playa-del-carm...editusergroups I'll give you access to the merchant forum. |
