It shouldn't be that hard to imagine that a phone that was born from an email only appliance will be better at handling email (especially since, as MikeW points out, it has a server attached to the corporate mail server and helping it, and doing a far better job at that - including excellent compression - than Active Sync does), just as a phone that was born from a media player will be better at playing media... it's also quite easy to imagine that an actual keyboard is easier to type on than a touch screen, particularly if you're very used to that.

And yes, as terrible as Microsoft Exchange is, there's no way I'd use gmail for sensitive data given its current lack of security.
I've had no problems with Active Sync and the app that came with my Droid that hooks into it. I've never had a Blackberry so I have nothing to compare it with. I'm pretty sure others at the office are going to go away from their Blackberry's and from an infrastructure point of view I don't mind maintaining one less server. However, the Blackberry's just work for their main intended purpose; but at the expense of dealing with the darned Blackberry servers. Also not sure how my calendar and contacts apps compare with the Blackberry.

My wife also got the 'Droid and her work has Exchange but no Blackberry server so it has served her well.

My inbox stays updated with the latest emails. I filter a lot of my emails to other folders, so the important things are in my Inbox, and if I need I can open another folder and it will quickly sync up with the latest emails. My Calendar stays up to date and notified me of events (however, I have to dismiss an event on my 'Droid and then dismiss it again on Exchange).

I'm guessing the 'Droid and iPhone email apps will quickly outshine the Blackberry apps, but that is dependent on Microsoft staying up to speed. Of course MS could change direction, which I doubt, and require a MS app only running on a MS smartphone O/S.

Thanks, I am going to scale back. They told me to start out with a higher plan to see how much usage, but I didn't even dent 3Gs.

I like having unlimited texting, but I wish they had a talk plan less than the required 400 minutes. I rarely talk to anyone on the phone.

I'm not in denial. You just describe an experience remarkably different from my own and I'm trying to understand why.

Sometimes that's on a level way above my knowledge base, like the stuff Mike has been detailing. Sometimes it's much simpler and I can comment more easily, as with the number of touches you mentioned to get to your mail, or having tens of thousands of emails that might be to blame for a loss of speed. Sometimes it seems more of a purely personal preference thing, like what Shammy was saying about preferring Swype over the touchscreen keyboard, which echoes previous discussion about the button keyboard v touch screen keyboard.

I never denied that you or others had problems, or that Shammy or others don't prefer buttons. I said I didn't have those problems and didn't like those buttons. And that in the case of the problems, that I was trying to find out more and understand why you had such a different experience from mine.

I have no problem staying under 200MB / mo, either, FWIW, melliedee. Most of my usage is through the wireless at home, and when I'm out, much of it is email, though there's a fair amount of web checking, too. I virtually never try any music streaming or YouTube videos while out, and also avoid downloading any big image files or other attachments in emails until home.

At first I would make sure to reset my usage record on the phone at the beginning of each billing cycle and then check it carefully as the end of the month approached. Don't even do that, now. Just looked and I'm up to a whopping 70 MB, or just over 1/3 of my plan's allotment, but we're 3/4 of the way through the billing period already.

I'm assuming there is some similar data tracker feature on your phone?

Yup, that was my only point really. That's what they're made for and so far RIMM hasn't really shown an ability to catch up with iphones or android devices doing anything but email.

So sad. I just realized I can connect my 'Droid to my home wireless

Not that I would use it at home since I have my laptop with me.

I have the BB Torch. Absolutely love it. I also have 3 email accounts attached to it currently, and maybe adding my work one shortly....not sure if I want to receive work emails while I am not at work yet. Anyways, thus far I have had no problems with any of the apps, playing videos etc. etc. It's fairly easy to learn how to use as well. I was expecting a larger learning curve, based on public opinion, but the HTC Touch Pro was much more difficult to figure out.

One thing I don't like about my HTC Incredible is that the screen is very hard, if not impossible, to read in bright sunlight.

i have the captivate and have the same problem....

did you know you can start a band with it?

Take Me Out: Four guys jamming on the subway with their iPhones as instruments. [VIDEO]

unfortunately though, after this vid was shot, each one tried to place a call on their phone and each call was dropped....
