Please opine: The National Urban League

Saw this article (pasted below, read if you wish) on the CNN website after hearing about it on the news. To me, this insinuates that the 'inequality' that is being ranted about is MY fault, in that I am a caucasian. Also disturbing are the 'recommendations' that are being sought. Lots of spending in there. If there is a "71% difference in the equality" between blacks and whites, doesn't that infer that 71% of the "cure" will be paid by white tax dollars? Hmmmm...... I am not trying to stir up a racial debate. Just seeking others opinions. Eric Holder said we are cowards for not talking about race and race related issues. I'm no coward.

CNN ARTICLE
Report sees 'sobering statistics' on racial inequality - CNN.com

Some snippets from the above article:

* The Urban League's equality index shows the status of blacks at 71 percent that of whites. It said that economics "remains the area with the greatest degree of inequality," with social justice, health and education following.

* Blacks remain twice as likely to be unemployed, three times more likely to live in poverty and more than six times as likely to be imprisoned compared with whites, according to the group's annual State of Black America report issued Wednesday.

* The report lists policy recommendations in the areas of home ownership, jobs, health and education. Here is a sampling:

Increasing funding for underskilled workers' job training programs.

Funding infrastructure development

Passing a home buyers' bill of rights that would protect and educate consumers and provide home-buying help.

Guaranteeing access to high-quality early education for 3- and 4-year-olds. (Would this not require busing in many cases?)

Well I read that, and I'm a white guy (as you know ), and I don't feel like I or other white folks are being blamed for the situation, as you say. The funding doesn't bother me, either, as I think it's a generally a good idea to fund education for kids and job (re)training for adults, and I don't see that those are being voiced in terms of the race of the kids or adults involved, there.

I do think this is an important point for everybody to keep in mind, FWIW:

Quote:
the "historic" election of Obama, the nation's first black president, "may cause us to fall prey to a false sense of accomplishment and self-satisfaction, and that apathy and complacency may set in."
Actually I think that was an important part of the context to consider wrt Holder's comments, and seems to be for this report, as well. That is, they seem to be saying, hey, you know, issues involving racial equality haven't all been resolved or gone away, here.

As far as I can see, at least.

Thanks for your input, Steve. I guess the frustration on my part is there does not seem to be an end to the 'inequality' thing. I understand (somewhat---after all, I am a cracker/whitey/honkie---none of that bothers me ) the frustration on the other side because of the history of injustices. I don't know what the 'ending' is that the Urban League and similar groups are seeking, or if indeed they are looking for an end result. May suit their agenda better if there never is one. Sometimes certain groups come across that way, from all races. Just my opinion.

Well certainly all sorts of groups push their particular agendas -- that's the reason most of them exist in the first place, from The Urban League (which I don't know much about) or the more famous NAACP to NOW or NARAL or MADD or labor unions or Greenpeace or the LDS or Gay/Lesbian advocates or academics or the wealthy or whoever. And certainly some have more well reasoned claims or arguments or proposals than others, who may have more aggressive or even seemingly outrageous approaches. From that report, I got the impression less of the latter and more of calm reason, but as I say, I for one don't know much about that group...

If you think you are frustrated about it, just think of how those who are downstream on the equality thing feel

Aw, poor Voof. You criticized a group of Moms who lost kids in senseless drunken car accidents. Are you really surprised?

It oughta, at least in my book. It seems like your garden variety, two-word, compound adjective, used prenominally, as far as I can see.

And outrage? That's so last week...
