Introducing Coco's Cat Rescue!

Coco's Cat Rescue's is a rescue charity in Playa del Carmen focusing on the spaying and neutering of feral cats and the care & re-homing of kittens in need of rescue. We provide free or low cost spay and neuter surgeries to low income residents, as well as vaccinations and basic animal care. In our first 18 months we have rescued 122 kittens, 100 of which have been successfully spayed/neutered and re-homed. Twenty two kittens are still up for adoption; please contact us if you have an interest in providing a loving home for them.

In striving to reduce the local cat population Coco's Cat Rescue runs a TNR (trap spay/neuter return) program and so far have trapped, spayed/neutered over 100 feral cats. Also 20 cat owners who could not afford the operation for their pets have used our facility (for free or on an open donation basis.) We are now working with 5 local vets (Claudia Lewy, Roxana Gongora, David Tabasco, Eduardo Cárdenas and Adriana Salmron) here in Playa del Carmen who offer services free of charge. It is because of these wonderful vets that we only have to pay for medicines and equipment. However this is still a considerable cost!

We are also committed to education which encourages responsible pet ownership and challenges negative associations with feral cats and consequent cruelty.

Our foundation grew from The Peanut Pet Shelter in Playa del Carmen who have been rescuing and providing adoption services for dogs and cats for the last 18 months. Coco's Cat Rescue wishes to acknowledge and thank the Peanut Pet shelter for their vision & for being an active inspiration to rescue organizations & anyone who cares for the well being of animals.

Coco's cat rescue recognizes the unique needs and requirements of both cats and dogs as individuals. Our vision is to provide a separate rescue organization specializing on cats only; we believe this distinction will ultimately allow for a more focused provision of services to both groups of animals.

Coco`s cat rescue is named in memory of my kitten coco who unfortunately had a happy but short life. After her passing i decided to address the problem of too many stray cats-which leads them to be cruelly treated. Each kitten that is rescued is in dedication to my baby Coco who I loved so much.

Coco's cat rescue is excited to continue providing care and services for the cats of Riviera Maya. We are looking forward to expanding and improving our outreach and education programs.

We will be launching our website soon!

Below are photos of some of the cats and kittens available for adoption

The kittens are gorgeous....

why do so many of them look like they are part Siamese? We noticed this in Cozumel as well.

Ohhhh...what cuties!

I have done the doggie washes at the shelter and I thought I heard they had cats at another location--now I know. Coco sounds like a special kitty whose memory is turning into a great cause! Cant wait for the website.

Any volunteer opp's for visitors- cleaning, brushings? bottle feeding kittens?...?...what about "needed" items to donate?

Having just dropped off some goodies to Laura this afternoon, I got to see some of those sweet kitties. In fact, as soon as I got in the door, she handed me a mini-bottle and a mini-cat and set me to feeding. They are too adorable for words and I wish I'd finally go over the edge and become that crazy cat lady so I could take them all home with me! Laura loves them all and takes wonderful care of them. The spay/neuter and release program is helping to solve the problem of too many strays for many generations to come. Kudos to Laura and everyone who is helping out with this project!

How wonderful that you are providing this much needed service! While I love our doggie friends, kitties hold a special place in my heart.
Is there a way to make monetary donations to Coco's?

Thank you for the great work you all do for our furry friends.

I believe it was you who sold me my Peanut Pet Shelter watch last year at Bad Boys, right??

I'm so happy to hear that Coco's is now officially up and running, and hopefully this announcement will send some sorely neede pesos in your direction.

Thanks for the pics of the kitties..... you KNOW I'm in tears now from seeing them!!!!

(((((hugs to you and kitties)))))) from me, Eli, and Sophie (my two "fuzzy kidz")

Excellent announcement Laura!!! I can't wait to see the Web Site which Libby from the Roo forum has generously donated her time to create for CoCo's Rescue!!!

You and Carlos are really special people....as are all of the volunteers involved in the Coco's Cat Rescue! I'm happy to be a volunteer with you & with the Peanut Pet Shelter! You, Andy & Jen blow my mind with the hard work, commitment & dedication to create a better environment for the homeless pets in the town of Playa del Carmen!

I've always been a "dog person", but once I got involved in trapping cats & kittens with you....my heart discovered more room for my feline friends!!! Knowing that the seven kittens I had at my house last May all found good homes through your connections....pretty much made me a Cat/kitten lover! They are all so special & all so unique!!!

Laura you ROCK! May Coco's Cat Rescue thrive & it's goals continue to be met!!!

I'm going to take some photos of my neutered/spayed little colony by my house. It's so wonderful to know that they are happy, well fed & cannot reproduce! All the research I've done tells me that TSN (Trap, spay, neuter) is the best solution to achieve Zero Population Growth.....and of course then less suffering.

Bravo!!!

Maureen

So glad you're making such terrific progress, Laura. Please let us know how we can send along a little financial help once you get that set up. We'd be pleased to participate in some small way. Dogs are terrific, and we're pleased to support the wonderful work Andy and Jen are doing, but we have a special place in our hearts for cats.
