6 DAYS and counting!! Cell Phone and Amex question...

Leaving next Friday -- and we can NOT wait!

I have an iphone -- does anyone have any advice on using ATT service and an Iphone while in playa? Although I certainly won't be using it often, but if I want to surf the net or make calls... has anyone had any trouble?

Also, spending cash, and credit cards. Do most restaurants in town accept Amex? Or should we stick to the Visa?

Thanks, come join us!!!

Talk to AT&T

If you plan to use it much for calls, get a Mexico plan for the time you are down there.

If you are going to be using wifi for data, don't worry about the data plan so much, but if not make sure to get a Mexico data plan from AT&T, otherwise if you use it much you could end up with several hundred dollars in extra charges very easily.

Make sure you turn data roaming off!! This is very important.

I do not use any credit cards in Mexico. I use a debit card to get cash and use cash.

I don't know about the iphone, but you will find that most restaurants don't take plastic anymore.

Cash is king, especially in the smaller establishments. I wouldn't rely on a credit card. Bring a debit and use the ATM.

Yeah ... don't bring it with you. Or at least turn off the data portion of your service. I have a BB Storm and made the mistake of not turning off my data service (I have unlimited plan at home) during our march trip. My bill, which is usually $145/month for 4 phones, was $500. Over $300 of it was ridiculous data usage roaming charges.

Open up an email with pictures ... BAM ... $10 bucks. Even if you don't open that email, it still gets pushed to the phone. Send a MMS with a picture of the beach to 10 of your friends or family .... $12.50. Even though it is one message, I did send it to 10 people.

First time I took my BB with me ... I learned a valuable lesson for sure ... and I am no noob.

You can sign up for a Mexico data plan for the time you are going to be there that will be much less expensive.

You can also, on the iPhone with AT&T, turn data roaming off and avoid that.

If you have access to wifi, with the iPhone, data roaming can be turned off and you can still do all the web stuff and email stuff you want to without incurring charges. I used wife with my iPhone at the hotel in Merida with no charges and at some restaurants in Playa (La Vagabunda, had to ask the waiter for the access code) with no data roaming charges.

I know nothing about the Blackberry Storm or any other Blackberry, though.

Not sure about the i phone plans. I also have ATT and when we're in playa I just change my plan to an international plan and switch it back when I get home. As for AmEx thats the only card I carry but only for emergencies, Cash is best.

We went to ATT yesterday and determined it made more sense for us to pay for the minutes used and not add the Mexico calling plan. The main benefit of the plan is charging you a monthly fee which makes the per minute charge less. We are taking two phones and it would have been a $15 charge and I think it was 59 cents per minute. Without the plan it was .99 cents. You will need to get international access put on your phone but I don't think there is a fee and I'm pretty sure you can call their 800 number to get it done. We just wanted the ability to call each other if we were to get separated.
