Just because it is not yet in Quintana Roo does not mean people should not worry about it. People travel....It was the case with the Sars here.

Just another reminder to wash your hands, carry hand sanitizer (60% alcohol or more)....

There is a long Associated Press article in the San Diego newspaper

here

Quote:
Scientists said the virus combines genetic material from pigs, birds and humans in a way researchers have not seen before.

"We are very, very concerned," spokesman Thomas Abraham said.

"We have what appears to be a novel virus and it has spread from human to human," he said. "It's all hands on deck at the moment."

President Felipe Calderon cancelled a trip and met with his Cabinet to coordinate Mexico's response. The government has 500,000 flu vaccines and planned to administer them to health workers, the highest risk group.

There are no vaccines available for the general public in Mexico, and authorities urged people to avoid hospitals unless they had a medical emergency, since hospitals are centers of infection.

They also said Mexicans should refrain from customary greetings such as shaking hands or kissing cheeks, and authorities at Mexico City's international airport were questioning passengers to try to prevent anybody with possible influenza from boarding airplanes and spreading the disease.

But the CDC said Americans need not avoid traveling to Mexico, as long as they take the usual precautions, such as frequent handwashing.

I saw one other that seemed to be mostly about travel to Mexico. The flu is present in San Diego and near San Antonio, TX. I do not think this is a story solely about Mexico City.

I have never flown through Mexico City before, and I would not delay travel to the Yucatan now if I had any planned.

This could end up being a pretty big health story, though. Go ahead and merge the threads if they need to be merged, but please use a title that indicates what the thread is about

Of course up here in Canuck land they will blow this out of proportion as anything to do with Mexico is dangerous...even though we probably had at least 20 people drop dead from one or another enfluenza virus related illnesses this year. I love the media here. They will probably not even acknowledge that the strain started in the US.

Reminds me of the SARS outbreak here. It was isolated pretty much to the greater Toronto area but everyone was cancelling their trips to other areas of the country like Vancouver...4,373 km away.

Glad to hear everyone is healthy in QRoo.
I will try not mingle with any pigs before I come down.
Bravo, finally a voice of wisdom!

The Center for Disease Control has a web page up that they will update at 3:00 pm daily with information and the number of CDC Laboratory confirmed cases in the US and internationally.

I think listening to science in cases like this is the thing to do.

Sorry about the "free" flu

shots. Fortunately they are free in Ontario. Now I am going to have to try and find the article that posted which flus the shots "hopefully" gave you immunity from.

People are not going to stay home if they are "sick". They have already paid for their trip; maybe didn't take cancellation insurance (that I'm not even sure covers you for the flu) and they are going. With any luck, you are not sitting beside them, or have any contact with them.

I agree Dijo..People do not cancel their trips when ill ..

Nor do they stay home from work..miss School or stay out of the malls etc.... even at the nursing home the isolation rules are a joke..
Very hard telling someone with Dementia they must stay in their room ... Also during an outbreak staff are needed more than ever so many work though ill....

There have been no reported cases in this area. It's concentrated in Mexico City.

This is the world wide prolem that V.P. Joe Biden mentioned about during the debates. I wonder why the President hasn't done anything about this.

We'll be in Playa...

...next Wednesday for 10 days - CAN'T WAIT!!

Folks - RELAX! Use common sense & good hygeine ( as you should always ) & you'll be just fine.

As to immunization - it's a crap-shoot. There are hundreds of strains of influenza; each year the WHO / CDC takes an educated guess as to the 2 or 3 strains they will innoculate against & hope they guess right, so the degree of protection is tenuous at best.

Now this may be a disappointment for some Playa-goers, but it might be wise to limit the booze, stay hydrated & get much more rest than you may be inclined to get on a typical Playa holiday. That will keep your defenses up. Or, do like me & spend most of your time underwater, breathing ultra-purified compressed gases & communing with the fishes...

This started in March, in San Diego, apparently

Scientists track new swine flu virus

April 23, 2009 — 11:45am ET | By John Carroll

The CDC has mustered a group of 50 scientists and epidemiologists to study a rare new strain of swine flu that afflicted two children in the San Diego area last month.
