Very scary indeed, they where saying 60 deaths in Mexico and 9 in the US in relation to this Flu.
This could cause a huge panic in both countries.

I do think that the swine flu in San Diego, CA; San Antonio, TX and the DF in Mexico are not particularly on-topic for the General Playa del Carmen forum, since those are all very far away from Playa del Carmen.

No deaths I have seen reported in the USA. If you have seen some, please let us know the source.

So far I have seen fewer than 10 cases reported in the US, only one of which required hospitalization with no deaths reported.

That's the same thing I heard on the news tonight...
"so far, all have recovered."

It's now 13, by my count, started today on this topic in the Yucatan Peninsula forums on TA.

One aspect in which Playa.Info has a lot of catching up to do, I guess.

New York City would be another bad place for such a thing to break out:

New York health officials announced Friday they are testing about 75 students at a Queens school for swine flu after the students exhibited flu-like symptoms this week.

A team of state health department doctors and staff went to the St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens on Thursday after the students reported cough, fever, sore throat, aches and pains.

Well, I don't see where it involves the Yucatan at this time, which is why I think it belongs on the off-topic thread for now. The scientists are concerned and are not sure what is going to happen. I think they are the ones we should pay follow.

We'll see what happens over the next days and weeks.

Well that may make you as safe as any of the others who contracted the disease in the US:

Quote:
Among the swine flu cases in the United States, none had had any contact with pigs...
But what struck me most from that same article was that while worry is focused on Mexico, check out the comment of Dr Richard Besser, acting head of the CDC:

Quote:
There is no point in trying to use containment measures in the United States, he said, because the swine flu virus has already appeared from San Antonio to San Diego, without any obvious connections among cases. Containment measures usually work only when a disease is confined to a small area, he said.

I haven't seen anyone walking around with a mask in Merida, Yucatan. This flu isn't high on my radar and I am currently a visitor in the Yucatan peninsula. Relax

The photo I saw in the paper just this morning was of a family in Mexico city with masks on. The flu cases have been confined to there and a couple of other larger cities, no beach destinations are on the list. 20 people dead confirmed due to this strain of flu and another 40 deaths possible- 900 cases altogether.

It is a strain of swine flu never seen in humans before, an appears to be pretty lethal so they are naturally taking it very seriously.
No cases at all of Canadians returning home infected. (But it is certain our flu shots here would not contain this strain, it's new. The most a flu shot might do is reduce the length and severity of a different type.)

From what I have read, it's not the media being irresponsible at all, it's people blowing it out of proportion because they don't read the FACTS. There are no travel advisories.
