Would you - Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda?
Hi everyone,
I just had a miscarriage and lost my angel twins at almost 12 weeks pregnant. After some coaxing, I got him to agree, pending this swine flu thingy. We are thinking early June. ANYWAY, I found a great deal for 4 nights at BBGE - it's $1200 (including flight & with insurance)...that's a price my hubby can't say no to. My concerns are, as always, some less than favorable reviews and the last two times we went we stayed at Iberostar Quetzal (which we LOVEEEEE). We are looking for something a little different though - new experience. Will we be utterly disappointed? We are fairly easy-going and not high maintenance like a lot of TA people. If we have cervaza we are pretty happy. It seems like there are not many bars in this huge resort? $1,200 is still $1,200 if we will hate it. We could pay $500 more and go somewhere else, but I would rather use the $500 for another Fat Cat trip and another excursion. WOULD YOU DO IT? I think I know my answer, and I'm pretty sure we will end up doing it...but just have to check with my Playa peeps. :P (p.s. do they have Havana Club here?) We are heading to the BBGE on May 23rd. With flight, hotel and no insurance for 6 days it cost us $1400. I've never been to this resort before but in my opinion, a vacation is all about what you make of it. Even at the finest resort there are things people could complain about. I am soo sorry for your loss. It sounds like you desperately need to get away so if it were me I'd book it!

We stayed at BBGE and we also stayed at Iberostar Paraiso Beach which I think is fairly comparable to Quetzel. We loved Iberostar, lets say we liked BBGE. At that price I would jump on it, I don't think you will be disappointed overall. The rooms at BBGE are nice (request an upgrade if the resort is not full, we simply told them it was our anniversary and we were upgraded to a room with a hot tub). The restaurants were a bit inconsistant when we were there but I think they have resolved those issues. The bars are not as numerous as some other resorts and the service was a bit slow but managable. BBGE's entertainment may be dissappointing compared to Iberostar's if that is important to you. Bottom line, we had a great time there as we always do, I think you will be happy with the resort with the great price you are getting.

We were at the BBGE last year and are scheduled to return on June 3 of this year for 8 nights. The resort is quite large (over 900 rooms), with the rooms in 8 buildings. Buildings 1-5 are located near the main pool and beach while buildings 6-8 are near the lobby and have their own pool. We were in building 2 last year with a jacuzzi suite. In 9 trips to the area the room and food was the best we have had at any resort. The only downside are that the water at the beach is murky and sometime has seaweed in it. The have carts that are constantly traveling around the resort for you to ride if you do not desire to walk. I think the price you have is quite good and that you should go for it.

Jillianbee, I just wanted to express my condolences for the loss of your angel twins. I know the pain of miscarriage first hand and can just imagine the devastation being multiplied by two. I hope you have a relaxing and rejuvenating vacation with your man.

Grand Porto Real instead
We were thinking of staying at BBGE as well, but we connected with a few couples who have stayed there and they suggested not to due to the long lines and lack of waitstaff at the pool and beach bars, as well as the restaurants not being very good.
I recommend the Grand Porto Real...just my opinion. [On a side note, I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. I hope you find some peace with everything and take time out while you're away to enjoy the little peice of heaven that is Playa del Carmen. You deserve some happiness. All the best.] |
