My absolute favorite jeweler in Tulum!!

Two years ago while in Playa for Peepstock March 2007, we ventured off to El Paraiso in Tulum. It truly is my most favorite place.

As I walked along the beach toward the ruins, I came across a palapa set way back off the beach with a sign reading "Joyeria". It didn't look like much and was a bit intimidating, but my mind was made up that I needed to explore.

Anyone that knows me, knows I love my jewelry. I probably would walk thru fire for it..........well, maybe not, but you get my point.

I came upon an amazing man named Vicente. He was so interesting to talk to and it blew my mind that he lived right here on the beach with his dog guarding his business while he was away in town picking up supplies. He made the most incredible jewelry from all sorts of findings. Stones, shells, wild boars teeth.......just amazing original pieces and had a story to tell about every one.

Here are a few pictures from March 2007 of Vicente and his beachfront palapa:

I bought a bracelet from him even though I wanted so much more and when I returned the following year excited to visit with him again, he was gone. His palapa was pretty much destroyed and I kept wondering what could have happened to him. Did he leave Mexico? Did the hurricane destroy his home and business??

After telling Susie Q about this awesome man, she told me she had found a wonderful jeweler in Tulum Pueblo. As she described him to me.......I just knew!!! She had found Vicente!

On my most recent trip this past May 2009, Susie and I visited him together and what a wonderful and happy feeling it was to see him again! This time, in his own gallery which was decorated beautifully and with tons of original pieces along with artwork as well. Everything was displayed beautifully and he was as interesting and as friendly as I remembered him.

I actually returned to visit with him a second time. This time I dragged along Claudette and Nikki and they too fell in love with his work.

For anyone interested he is located right in Tulum Pueblo, maybe a block or so north of Pollo Bronco and on the same side. Here is a copy of his business card with the exact address and I have also taken pictures of his store front.

Us Chicas got bling!!

If you look really close, you can see the face carved into the side of the shell which is inlaid with turqoise and accented with black coral:

This ring I think is my favorite!

Coral bracelet inlaid with turqoise:

This is a real shell! Not so comfortable, but ooohhh so fun to wear!

Ankle bracelet:

Turqoise with Cornelian necklace. Let me tell you.....this sucker is heavy!!

Turqoise neclace with beads from Bali and a wild boar's tooth carved with a Jaguar (Balam) and Kululkan (snake with feathers). Not sure what all that means, but I thought it was totally cool!

Beleive me when I tell you, you won't be sorry if you stop in for a visit.

Thanks for the tip, Silvergirl. I will check his place out in November. I'm always on the hunt for unique jewelry. Really cool stuff! I love shell mixed with turquoise.

Nice stuff Kim. Hey girl what's with Face Book taking up all your time??......I miss your posts. No TR this time round? Curious minds would like to know how your son's love life is doing and what kind of trouble you go into while in Playa this time round. Heck, I'm down right disappointed. You're letting down your fans

I believe this is the man from whom I bought the most GORGEOUS ring in Tulum. He had a stand set up at Zamas, where I had breakfast, but let me know he had a gallery in town.

So that's where you and Susie got the shell rings. I'll have to stop there in December! I like the coral and turquoise bracelet, too.

I'm pretty sure everything he had in there was for sale. Didn't get a price on it though. My mind was totally on jewelry that day.

The ring was a bit pricey, but its huge and its beautiful and very heavy so I know it was well worth what I paid.

The bracelet I beleive was around 250 - 300 pesos. Very reasonable.
And very original.

Oh Marj.........I'm sorry. I do admit that FB is taking more of my time, but now that weather is good I'm spending more time outside and in my garden. Lots of work to be done........its never ending.

At this point, I feel most of my trip reports are beginning to look the same. I had thought about posting another "picture report" because I do have many.

I hope to get to that soon..............I promise.

And whatever trouble I got into this time around..........well, it stayed in Mexico! It was a solo trip ya know!

All kidding aside........I had a great time and got to spend quality time with people I care about. What more could a chica ask for?

I remember you talking about that ring, Heather. Do you recognize him in the pic? He is awesomely talented.

Oh Anne..........he's got tons of stuff. And......he can make or adjust anything you want. I spent a while in his store and when I went back the second time, I saw things I didn't see the first time around. Especially that turquoise and silver ring. It is drop dead gorgeous!

I ADORE Vicente and I just drool when I go into his shop. I want it all! I still can't decide if it's wonderful art that attracts me so much or just the calm aura he has about him. He's a beautiful man who makes beautiful things. I wish I could justify more than what I have been able to buy from him.
