The reason is that the government mandated a maximum number of surgeries the neurosurgeons are allowed to perform in any given month. My husband's strong muscled tradesman's body withers away to nothing while he waits. As does our savings. As does his self worth. Something is wrong with the system, clearly. I don't know how to fix it, but something needs to be done when hard working people are left in this situation, to sit and wait. On the other hand, our son has had over a million dollars worth of surgeries and procedures and that continues to climb as he gets continual cardiology care. He would likely be very expensive to insure under any other program. Would he get the best care at a state hospital? So I'm on the fence. Parts of it work. Parts of it fail. It is not perfect, and it DOES need some kind of reform, at the very least some investigation. |

Canada does not have enough surgeons or facilities to handle their population. I can schedule an MRI or cat-scan for the next day. I didn't have to wait to get a knee replacement. I'm sure Tammy didn't have to wait to get her treatments and surgery. That's true for most Americans with or without insurance. I find it horribly wrong that Gingers husband is still suffering from pain and not able to work because of the govt. It was wrong for Bumper to have to wait so long to get into a re-hab for therapy. With the size of our population how in the hell is Obama care going to handle it? and Govt screws everything up to begin with, with all their red tape. They can't even stop fraud in the medicaid and medicare system. |

Hey, Stogey- if men could have babies, why, they'd just schedule an appointment for an epidural and caesarean!
Oh.....wait....that is what most women do today. ![]() nevermind!Yes, I am sure that birthing room is typical of US hospitals too. ![]() I sure never meant to imply the ones in the US aren't like that....only that if you'd believe the propoganda people like Rush Limbaugh claim about how bad it is up here, you'd assume the rooms are like prison cells. I just saw the pic on Facebook and thought it would be funny to post it for that reason. For sure it is not perfect and there are horror stories (and I have heard horror stories about US hospital errors and dealing with HMOs, too)....not many things in the world are perfect....hopefully we can continue to improve upon our system while keeping the ideals behind it intact. |

Please read my above post. I never claimed it was perfect up here.....nor did I ever say you guys should copy our system...I actually agree it would NOT work for you. All I know is that we have never had any problems, and have had good experiences. From Don's hip replacement surgery that went smoothly all the way through to my mom's stage two cancer treatment over 3 years ago now- for which she did NOT have to wait to get treatment an inordinate amount of time whatsoever- we have no complaints. I am sure there are areas that are much better than others, for many reasons- this is true in every country, with all different types of medical systems, I think....don't you? |

Most (not all) of our state hospitals are very good in this state.
The reason I know this is because my sister in laws father(no insurance) has stage 3 colon cancer and recieved treatment for it (at no charge) at a state hospital and is doing quite well all things considered. He did have to wait 6 hours for his first appointment, but after that he recieved very good quick care. (surgery, chemo and rads and meds - all free) Cancer patients are very lucky to live in this area - we have a wealth of resources for assistance. I am not sure if it is that way in eveyr US city. But like Maggie said - some regions are better than other. Same here in the US. I would think the larger the city - the harder it is to get treatment due to the large population. |

This is a really good website/blog - that was given to me during my treatment.
It is by a doctor and has some really good insights on the American health care system Your 10 minute office visit needs 8 people and 45 minutes of work |

Of course you could just blame someone else when things don't work out.
