You wimin have it so much easier than we men do. If we were the ones giving birth. We'd just put ourselves in front of a tv with a bag of doritoes and a few beers.

Yep. My husband has been waiting 16 months just to get ON the waiting list for back surgery. Under Drs. orders no lifting over 2lbs, no driving, no running, or moving quickly...sit on a couch and wait. And take all these pills.

The reason is that the government mandated a maximum number of surgeries the neurosurgeons are allowed to perform in any given month. My husband's strong muscled tradesman's body withers away to nothing while he waits. As does our savings. As does his self worth.

Something is wrong with the system, clearly. I don't know how to fix it, but something needs to be done when hard working people are left in this situation, to sit and wait.

On the other hand, our son has had over a million dollars worth of surgeries and procedures and that continues to climb as he gets continual cardiology care. He would likely be very expensive to insure under any other program. Would he get the best care at a state hospital?

So I'm on the fence. Parts of it work. Parts of it fail. It is not perfect, and it DOES need some kind of reform, at the very least some investigation.

Birthing rooms are always swanky and nice - usually the best rooms in the hospital........mine kinda looked like that 17 years ago.
I agree..I remember when my nephew was born in a really nice big birthing room..that was19 years ago.

Canada does not have enough surgeons or facilities to handle their population.
I can schedule an MRI or cat-scan for the next day. I didn't have to wait to get a knee replacement. I'm sure Tammy didn't have to wait to get her treatments and surgery.
That's true for most Americans with or without insurance.

I find it horribly wrong that Gingers husband is still suffering from pain and not able to work because of the govt. It was wrong for Bumper to have to wait so long to get into a re-hab for therapy.

With the size of our population how in the hell is Obama care going to handle it? and Govt screws everything up to begin with, with all their red tape. They can't even stop fraud in the medicaid and medicare system.

Hey, Stogey- if men could have babies, why, they'd just schedule an appointment for an epidural and caesarean!

Oh.....wait....that is what most women do today. nevermind!

Yes, I am sure that birthing room is typical of US hospitals too.

I sure never meant to imply the ones in the US aren't like that....only that if you'd believe the propoganda people like Rush Limbaugh claim about how bad it is up here, you'd assume the rooms are like prison cells.

I just saw the pic on Facebook and thought it would be funny to post it for that reason.

For sure it is not perfect and there are horror stories (and I have heard horror stories about US hospital errors and dealing with HMOs, too)....not many things in the world are perfect....hopefully we can continue to improve upon our system while keeping the ideals behind it intact.

Please read my above post.

I never claimed it was perfect up here.....nor did I ever say you guys should copy our system...I actually agree it would NOT work for you.

All I know is that we have never had any problems, and have had good experiences. From Don's hip replacement surgery that went smoothly all the way through to my mom's stage two cancer treatment over 3 years ago now- for which she did NOT have to wait to get treatment an inordinate amount of time whatsoever- we have no complaints.

I am sure there are areas that are much better than others, for many reasons- this is true in every country, with all different types of medical systems, I think....don't you?

Most (not all) of our state hospitals are very good in this state.
The reason I know this is because my sister in laws father(no insurance) has stage 3 colon cancer and recieved treatment for it (at no charge) at a state hospital and is doing quite well all things considered. He did have to wait 6 hours for his first appointment, but after that he recieved very good quick care. (surgery, chemo and rads and meds - all free) Cancer patients are very lucky to live in this area - we have a wealth of resources for assistance. I am not sure if it is that way in eveyr US city.

But like Maggie said - some regions are better than other. Same here in the US.

I would think the larger the city - the harder it is to get treatment due to the large population.

We are very lucky here as well....the Saskatoon Cancer Clinic is world renowned...

Quote:

The new Saskatoon Cancer Centre opened in the fall of 1988. Located on the south side of “Devil's Dip” and attached via a walkway to the University Hospital, 20 Campus Drive commands a panoramic view of the South Saskatchewan River Valley. Designed by Friggstad and Folstad, the pre-cast concrete structure was constructed for $17 million. The primary function of the three level 8,100 square metre facility is patient assessment and treatment although there is also an extensive area set aside for research purposes. The Saskatoon Cancer Clinic has a long history of service and innovation. Open in 1951 and located in G Wing of the University Hospital, the Clinic was the site of the world’s first non-commercial cobalt-60 therapy unit.

Funny note- when I worked at Case New Holland I worked with an engineer named Friggstad- the grandson of the one who designed it! Small world...

My real point was more about what a mess it's going to be with Obamacare. We are a populous country and the doctors are already loaded down with paperwork for the insurance companies which requires hiring extra staff to handle it. I read an article about how many doctors are calling it quits because they are having trouble making payrolls. Mostly due to how much insurance will pay for treatments, medicare, etc. not being adequate to cover their expenses to practice.

BTW.. HMO's are horrid! I hear nightmare stories all the time from people who belong to an HMO.

I'm glad that I am 2 years older than Slim..that's 2 years I won't have to deal with medicare...God wwilling.

This is a really good website/blog - that was given to me during my treatment.

It is by a doctor and has some really good insights on the American health care system

Welcome to the future of America. If you have a cold we can fix you,if you have a problem worse than that we can fix you in 16 months.Unless it's a hip then it's 5 years and you should have known you needed a hip 5 years ago!
Enjoy America.
