El Dorado Royale

Anyone been to El Dorado Royale, lately? Would like some confirmation that we chose the right AI resort. Any responses are welcome.
Thanks in advance.

We stayed at the El Dorado Royale 12/11-12/18. The resort is beautiful. There are only about 300 rooms and the resort is very spread out, so it never feels like it is crowded. We didn't like our first room and asked to see some others. We upgraded from a gardenview to oceanview and it was well worth the extra $200. Our room was in bldg. 4 on the bottom level and was the closest room to the beach. We literally could just walk out from the patio to the beach in seconds. The service is excellent. The restaurants are all very good to excellent. The only buffet is at one of the restaurants in the a.m. for breakfast -- all other meals are al la carte. On Weds. nights they have Mexican fiesta night and all restaurants are closed. We found this food to be the worst - not very good, but it is a great time as everyone in the resort goes there. The beach is a bit of a dissapointment since it is on the coral reef. You do need water shoes. However, if you walk a mile or so to the south, the beach is white sandy and beautiful. The only problems were with the power outages and the lack of control over the water temperature - but that is to be expected in Mexico. International liqours are available - scotch, vodka, bourbon, etc.
Beer is limited to Dos Equis on tap, and Tecate and Tecate light in cans. At least one bar had some kind of dark beer on tap. It is very easy to meet people at this resort, and we made many new friends. It is adult only, so no kids!!! They have lots of weddings here, so there are lots of young newlyweds. There is nothing to do here. So, if you want to lay on the beach under a palapa and drink beer and relax, this is the place for you. There are lots of tours available if you desire. I would definitely go back when I am in the mood for this kind of all-inclusive vacation.

good news

Thanks for the report, cook. Sounds a little quiet for my taste, but hey that's what Playa and Cancun are for... Guess I'll find out in one more day. Will post when I return home.

snorkling, snuba, tubing

Tex,

Looks like you had fun down in EDR. Where did you find information on the snorkling/tubing/snuba??? I am heading down there in 2 weeks for our honeymoon and am interested in anything you could point me to.

Thanks

bvermilyea,

Yes, we had a blast!! Info on Xel-Ha(seen in pics), can be found at EDR. Right across from the "swing bar", the excursion reps set up tables every a.m. They are very helpful and can answer all questions you have. Have fun on the honeymoon!!!

prices

Tex,

Thanks for that, approx how much do they charge to do these so we get a little better idea of how much cash to bring down with us?

Thanks again and I'm sure we will have a great time.

Where is the EDR? We stayed at Secrets Capri. Is it south or north of Secrets?

Edr

The EDR is north of Secrets, close to Puerto Morelos.

Loved the pics! We, too, are from Texas ad are going to EDR on Sunday (anniversary). We would like hints from you on things we should see/do while we're there. Did y'all like the dinner cruise? What other tours did you do? I saw that you went to Xel-ha, did you take a tour from the resort or did you hire a driver? Any info would be appreciated!

We had plans to do this and that, until we got down there. It was so nice to just sit and relax for a few days and unwind after the wedding. We did do the lobster dinner cruise in Cancun. That was very nice. and we did go to Playa one day...that was pretty fun...lots of shops. Other than that we were pretty lazy and enjoyed the nice weather, good drinks, good food....

Most of the tours you can set up office that would be to the right (sort of around the corner) after you walk out the front door of the lobby. There are several reps from different travel companies there ready to help you set up things you wish to do and typically they will provide transportation in a van. Watch out for getting your own cab they will try to make money off of you.
