This forum is fascinating. I live in Playa, have for 4 years. The amount of misinformation that people give is extraordinary. I will not go to the trouble to clear everything up, if I did it would take a long long time. But as one person put it, use a bit of common sense.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Why do cruise ships go almost solely to islands in the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Caribbean?

Why is there no dock in the tourist Mecca of Cancun???

The simple answer to the question is the same reason the dock at Puerto Real ( contrary to the time share sales pitch ) will not be used for large boats. They have too much drag. The water is not deep enough for them to dock. If it were they would have long ago here and many other places.

Before many of you pass judgment on Playa or development from your soapbox in the States, take a minute to think of the people here. This is one of the few places in the country where there is no abject poverty ( poverty is of course a relative term, the Mexicans here are no doubt poor to most readers on this site, but go to Mexico City, or Tijuana, or even the outskirts of Cancun for that matter and you will see real poverty ). There is good work for hard working individuals and there is opportunity for the young people here as well. All of this is because of tourism and development.

No one here wants to ruin our natural resources, but very few would like this place to go the way of Tulum either. In order to preserve the $150 / night yoga retreats with no electricity, how many jobs have been created?? How much revenue for the Government???? How many middle class Mexicans live in Tulum??? I know none. In Playa there are thousands. Take a trip to the Ejido if you want to see more.

A few more things on the site that I would like to clear up:

Supermarkets have restrictions on when they sell alcohol. Oxxo is not a supermarket. Don't automatically assume just because you bought a 5th of Jack there the Government officials are being paid off.

If and when a new airport goes in, it will NOT be in Playa proper. Do you have any idea what land costs here???

It also will not be along the highway. Do you have any idea what land costs there???

An airport, if and when it goes in, will not turn Playa into St. Martin or St. Barts. Why? Those places are islands. This is not. Look out the window next time you come in and check out all the land that is available not near 'civilization'
