Honeymoon at the RPDC 5/27/09 - 6/3/09
Day 1:
We flew down from Boston to Miami on a full flight, with no problems. We made our way across to the satellite terminal where our Miami to Cancun flight was supposed to take off in 90 minutes, grabbing some lunch on the way. We settled in, ate lunch, and commented about how empty the gate was. Suddenly, they announce over the loudspeaker that a flight to Punta Cana is having plane issues, and will be re-boarded at our gate, and that our flight is canceled. Um... ok... So they reschedule us for a 4:00 flight (three hours later), and we scramble to get a hold of USA Transfers to let them know our flight was canceled. We tried a couple numbers on our confirmation email, and ended up getting a voicemail, left a message and hoped for the best. When our flight finally boarded, it was less than half full, and this was two flights combined! We got to stretch out a little, which was great after the packed-tight flight from Boston. ![]() When we were headed over Cancun, I finally saw the aqua-blue water and I almost cried I was so excited. ![]() When we arrived at the airport, it was practically vacant! ![]() They made us fill out a little health form that basically informed us that they were experiencing a new strain of flu (no, really?) and asked if we had any of the symptoms of the swine flu (headache, fever, etc). Then we passed through a “health checkpoint” that was really just a guy in a mask collecting the forms (sorry for the bad pic, we were rushing) ![]() We made it through the airport pretty quickly – both got the green light, and were only harassed by 3 people on the way out. USA Transfers was waiting right outside for us with a sign with my name (yay!) even though we were 4 hours late, and they quickly whisked us away to the Royal. When we arrived, Veronique, the romance concierge was out for the day, so we had Anna check us in privately, and someone else offered us champagne and cold towels. We tried to get our free upgrade (when available, on your honeymoon), but were told there weren’t any available. I pouted for .03 seconds about how we probably would have gotten an upgrade if our earlier flight hadn’t been canceled, and then I got over it. Anna called over a bell boy to bring us to our room (397, which we picked online 48 hrs before) and we didn’t once see the “Guest Services” timeshare people. In fact, I didn’t even know where they sat until the last day, when we were checking out. It was soooo humid, and when the door to our room opened, that was the first thing I noticed, how ice cold the A/C was. Ahhhh. And the room was all made up for our honeymoon. ![]() ![]() ![]() But the best part was the view. Ohh the view! It was like I was standing in the pictures I had been stalking online for months. ![]() ![]() Once we got settled and cooled down, we changed into bathing suits and headed down to the beach for a little bit until it got dark, then strolled over to Pelicano’s for dinner. Mike got the steak and shrimp skewers, and I got the Chicken Tetrazzini. He liked his, but I wasn’t a fan... I ended up feeding half of mine to the stray cat hanging under our table. To Be Continued... |

Day 2:
We woke up around 7:00, which is pretty normal for us, and I peeked outside, expecting to see every chair in the place reserved with a blue-striped towel ![]() Hmm... or not. We got dressed and sunscreened up, and headed over to Pelicano’s for breakfast. Mike got some kind of tortilla omelet thing, and I got the Mexican Basket, which is basically a big basket of pastries and delicious banana bread. Yummm. And the view is great from Pelicano’s. ![]() Although they do have a bit of a bird problem – but they’re nice enough to wait until you leave to attack your leftovers ![]() After breakfast we picked out a couple seats near the pool, on a little peninsula, and that’s basically where we stayed all day. ![]() ![]() After lunch at Spice (the only time we went there... it was ok, but Pelicano’s was on the beach, so it won) we decided to walk around and check out the resort a little. View from the lobby ![]() The waterfall below the lobby ![]() Some little statue dude near the spa ![]() The doors to Chef’s Plate ![]() I was a bit overwhelmed for the first couple days, wanting to go everywhere and do everything all at once, so sorry that these first two days are a little jumpy. After lunch we went to see if we could lay on the beach for a while. To our surprise, there were plenty of beach beds available, so that’s where we spent the afternoon. ![]() ![]() ![]() This afternoon was the only rain we saw all week, and even then, it was sprinkles and dark clouds for about 10 minutes... not enough to leave the beach ![]() This night we went to Asiana for dinner, and were greeted by a cute (but evil looking in pictures!) cat that apparently hangs out outside the restaurant ![]() ![]() (side note: for people who were wondering about the dress code, there's my husband in shorts and flip flops on his way into Asiana... no dress code there!) The food was sooo good here... we got California and Philadelphia sushi rolls (a little afraid of trying raw fish at an AI), and then I got Chicken Tepanyaki and Mike got Hot and Sour Squids. For dessert we had the Tempura ice cream, also yummy. (sorry, I didn’t think to take pics of the food until later on in the trip!) After dinner we wandered around on 5th for a while, before heading back to the room Boston! ![]() ![]() When we got back to our room, there was a big fruit basket, sparkling wine, and little chocolates that my company had arranged to be sent up for us as a surprise, as well as a little towel bunny and bon bons from the housekeeper ![]() ![]() A night shot from the balcony ![]() Coming up... days 3-7, including a trip to Tulum |

Day 3:
Another breakfast at Pelicano’s – I discovered my new fave, Tropical Fruits with Yogurt and Honey. ![]() We spent this day on the beach, and watched the staff set up for a wedding reception over by the pier. They did a great job, and later in the day we saw the ceremony set up and the cocktail hour, and that night we heard the music bumping on the beach – looked like a blast! ![]() ![]() ![]() On our way to dinner we saw the most amazing sunset over the resort. The sky was so colorful! ![]() For dinner we went to Maria Marie’s. This is one of the two restaurants that enforces the dress code – we saw a couple turned away at the door because they were wearing their bathing suits and cover ups. The food here was sooo good. I got the Northern Style Tacos, and they were my favorite thing I ate all week ![]() Mike got the Veracraz fish (or something like that) ![]() And we had forgotten that this was the place with the great chocolate cake, so we had to wait an extra 15 minutes for it to cook, but it was worth it. It’s very tiny though, so don’t expect to share! ![]() ![]() Day 4: Another day in paradise We spent this one by the pool. For lunch (at Pelicanos) I finally decided to take some pics of our food. I got a cheeseburger and fries (not on the menu, but everyone seemed to be getting it)![]() Mike got some steak thing (I forget what it was called, but he liked it!) ![]() We went back to Asiana for dinner ![]() Hmm, guess this day was picture-light, haha Day 5: Another day by the pool. You can see our bubba kegs in action here ![]() We saw some interesting fashions at the Royal, but this took the prize ![]() Either it was a little cooler this day, or I was starting to get used to the humidity, so we decided to head in early and go shopping on fifth before dinner. ![]() You can kind of see the Hotel Cielo camera in this one: ![]() We saw this shirt in the big store near the bus station. I still have no idea what it’s supposed to mean ![]() When we got back to the resort, we saw the only critter that we saw at the Royal for the whole trip ![]() Still coming, our trip to Tulum, along with TONS of pictures! |
