Not exactly a shocker, but more potent and fleshed out accusations, now...

Quote:
6 FIFA members accused of wrongdoing in bidding

LONDON (AP) — Soccer's governing body was hit with new corruption allegations Tuesday when six FIFA executive committee members were accused of receiving or demanding bribes during bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Issa Hayatou of Cameroon and Jacques Anouma of the Ivory Coast were allegedly paid $1.5 million to vote for Qatar, according to evidence submitted to a British parliamentary inquiry by The Sunday Times newspaper.

The Gulf nation beat the United States in the final round of voting in December for the 2022 tournament. In a statement issued eight hours after the hearing, Qatar denied the allegations and said they would be proven unfounded.

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee of the House of Commons also heard from the former head of England's 2018 bid, who described the conduct of executive committee members Jack Warner, Nicolas Leoz, Ricardo Teixeira and Worawi Makudi in the 2018 contest as "improper and unethical."...

Do you think World Cup fans, and maybe even whole countries, will boycott the selection of Qatar?

Sorry -- missed this one!

I don't, no. I don't think anyone is going to boycott the event, once it takes place, unless there are perhaps just quite clear security or facility concerns or something. But in that case, FIFA would move the entire event to a back-up country that's ready to go without such security or facility concerns (like the US) late in the process, as they've done before.

But this news out today is quite interesting:

FA to abstain in FIFA presidential vote for Sepp Blatter or Mohamed Bin Hammam - News - MirrorFootball.co.uk

That must be the biggest statement by anybody yet that TPTB at FIFA suck and something needs to change.

Yes, there is that:

Quote:
It’s one existing international airport will need to triple in size. Nine stadiums need to be built, and the proposed host city of Lusail doesn’t even exist yet.

Then there’s that whole concept of solar-powered, carbon-neutral air-conditioning system for the stadiums to combat the 115-degree heat during a typical Qatari summer afternoon.
But I was thinking more about this:

Quote:
Not to mention the fact that visitors carrying an Israeli passport are not currently allowed in Qatar, homosexuality is illegal, single women under the age of 35 are typically required to have a male escort to enter the country and all women are forbidden to wear shorts and skirts.

The latter type of concern is particularly thorny and I don't know what is going to happen. The former -- well again, FIFA can pick the tournament up and put it somewhere ready with relatively little notice and the recipient will be quite happy.

Why on earth FIFA chose Qatar seems to be bribes, though. (Sorry, Qatar!) There appears to be little doubt about that among the masses, as there is little doubt about FIFA being corrupt, though some will vociferously defend the PR point of spreading the game across the globe and bolster that with attacks on England or the US for being presumptuous and sort of colonialist for thinking they had better bids. Neither of these arguments is particularly convincing, though, imo.

My MLS team couldn't score in the zona de tolerancia but once again, the UNAM Pumas are champions of Mexico.

Paco Palencia used to play in MLS, for Chivas USA.

They're starting to turn on each other in the corruption scandal:
FIFA investigates bin Hammam Warner for bribery - News | FOX Sports on MSN
In the meantime, a nice piece on Messi leading up to Saturday's Champions League final:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/22/sp...oy-genius.html
Includes a link to this video from that spectacular second goal of his to ice the victory that took them to that final. Poor Real Madrid didn't realize that with only half a dozen guys on Lio, he had them outnumbered.

Like the piece says,

Madrid’s defense engulfed him like white blood cells trying to fight off infection.

You might check it out, Melliedee, even if only for the inclusion of verse based on the play-by-play of

Quote:
British commentator Ray Hudson ... his ability to “coin phrases that defy both logic and belief” and by his unending quest to “invent a new language in English.”
Looks like the match starts at 1:45 Mexico time on Saturday...

Wonderful news!

It appears as if bin Hammam is found guilty of the bribery and barred from FIFA, he is set on taking down Blatter with him. It is another step in what is seemingly becoming a FIFA civil war...

Well pretty good first half. Really went game on when Rooney scored.

Can't remember the last time I saw a ref call a half with no added time at all!
