My libation of choice is single malt Scotch Whiskey. Favourite brands, in descending order: Cardhu, Dalwhinnie, Glenmorangie, Balvenie, Strathisla, Dalmore, Singleton, Macallan. I'm not a complete purist though. I like mine on the rocks, which is an affront to of those "straight up" officianados.
Preferred Canadian - Alberta Springs Sippin' Whiskey
On the subject of rum, I admit to being somewhat of a dilettante. I've never particularly enjoyed the stuff, though we toured several distilleries as we travelled the Caribbean. Research with a wide circle of bartenders yielded the information that they felt - almost unanimously - the best rum anywhere is Mount Gay Extra Old, produced in Barbados. We visited the distillery and sampled it. The only way they would serve it was in a snifter, straight up. I have to say I was impressed. I now have it on my bar for those rum fanciers who appreciate the good stuff. If someone asks for it with a soda pop mix, they get a cold scowl and some other main stream brand. I've got about 6 brands of rum on my extensive bar.
Tequila - Don Julio Reposado
Gin - Beefeaters
Vodka - Smirnoff (no imagination)
Irish - Bushmills
Sour Mash - Jack (is there any other?)
Bourbon - Never found one I like
Cognac - Remy Martin

Bump,
I apologize for any redundancy. i admit, I forget to check previous threads. This doesn't mean I'm at risk of losing my Member status does it? It won't (hopefully) happen again.
You are correct about rum from Barbados--especially Mt. Gay. I, too, find it a wonderful "sipper". Spent one of my honeymoons in Barbados and was delighted to learn of the amber gold's existence.
I concur with the rest of your choices, although I have found some of the New Country's gins can be as good as those of the Mother Country.
Damn, now I'm thirsty and still have 4 more hours to go in my cubicle, plus a court appearance. Oh well, cheers anyway.
