Netbook vs Laptop

Anyone have a netbook? What is the difference? Are they worth it? I would use it for casual surfing and updating my fantasy football team

Any thoughts or suggestions are much appreciated.

Check out the Samsung N110. I don't know if it is necessarily considered a Netbook but a mini Notebook. Love mine. I use it for casual surfing....laptop is used for photos and other things that take up memory. My only problem with the mini is that I now know I need glasses. Squint.....squint. Highly portable though.......love that fact.

I have the one that Luv2dance mentioned and it is killer.......And perfect for travel......The battery lasts forever and the wifi card in it picks up signals left and right......I would not hesitate to get it and you can research till your blue in the face and not find a better one out there imo..... The Samsung N110 manual refers to the maximum amount of RAM being 2GB. At the time of writing, the Samsung website still says that the maximum RAM is 1GB but this is likely to be a typo. I upgraded to two Gig of memory and there is no issue...I would have to agree that there was a typo when they said the Max was one gig....Just remember to go into Start/Run/then type msconfig/Click on the start up tab/ then disable all......This along with the memory upgrade will make it run as fast as possible along with downloading Auslogic Disk defrag the free version and defrag once a month......

Samsung N110 Laptop reviews - CNET Reviews

Also here is a little review I did of it on another forum.....

Love it......Received it a a couple of weeks ago now I guess.....Thanks for those that responded to my questions.....Would like to say I have done the four foot drop test and it still works perfectly.....By accident, had it under my arm in the provided sleeve when I opened the door for my wife it went down....Fast.....Lucky part is it landed flat...Just knocked the plastic piece out a bit that goes around the screen.....I just popped it right back in...Came right on....Has performed like new......This also happened to a Toshiba Satellite M series from years back...I had it and used it for six years....I take the drop as a good thing.....Even though accidental. Would also like to say I got the NC10 for my wife in blue....They are basically the same....110 has a larger touch pad and I think there are a couple of other things that are different......

As far as the WiFi card.....I have taken the NC110 out to several locations and have been impressed with the range and connections I have made at the three different locations on unsecured networks...Was never an issue at one or two bars.....

I have added several software programs to it and still run Mcafee and it is still fast....As fast as my Qosmio Quad of course not.....But it is fast........

I can feel no heat coming off mine in my lap and no fan noise....Have not installed Speed fan to see what it might be running at......

Have always gone in to startup and unchecked everything and boot back up and see what comes up as running......Get rid of everything that is running that you don't want running for me I have three things running ......

Was also impressed with the webcam, mic, speakers.....As far as Skype goes it is dead on.....Perfect picture with the cam and crystal clear sound when I am listening to one of my friends from Costa Rica......If you think that you are going to rock the house with the speakers you won't....But they are perfect for what they do......

Battery is awesome to me....I would never expect for it to get nine hours I am sure you can If you have nothing running......But for normal use I would say six maybe seven If you have your settings set correctly.......

We got these to take down South on trips to Mexico when we visit Playa Del Carmen and as far as for travel / mobility I don't think you can beat the 10 or 110.....

We have case logic covers for both of them...Neoprene covers that have a handle....We will slip then in our backpacks or carry ons when we travel.......

Overall could not be happier with either of them.......they do what we need them to do and more.......

One thing I would like to add is use Google Chrome instead of IE....It is faster as far as downloading pages.....

I have an Acer netbook, the one with the 10.1" screen and the 5-6 hour battery, not the one with the too tiny 8.9" screen with the too short battery life. I use it for travel only and it's awesome. Just over 2 pounds and fits right in my backpack, no big laptop case like I was used to carrying.

I want one, but don't have one yet. However, the schmuck who stole my credit card info ordered one on me. Bet they were surprised when the cops showed up instead of their mini.

Why do they say you have to get "Mobile Broadband Plan" and sign up for a two year agreement?

I don't get what they're offering, why you have to sign any kind of agreement, need them for any kind of service - the netbooks are wifi enabled and you just connect to a wireless signal. But the Acer is better than the HP (according to JimmyMN who helped me with my selection ). I paid about $300 (or maybe $350) for my Acer, it may be less now as I've had it for a while. I just wouldn't want to sign up with anyone for anything if it's not necessary, and from what I know, it's not.

The thing I like about MOST netbooks is they tend to come with Microsoft's XP operating system. It's usually the home edition, but it's still much more fleetfooted and reliable than Microsoft Vista.

The downside of netbooks is their choice of Intel processors... most use the Atom, which is lightweight compared to a core2duo mobile processor found in most regular notebooks/laptops. If your needs require a full blown processor, there are compact laptops out there that'll give you that edge for a bit more money.

My favorite traveling companions are either the Dell Latitude X300 or the Dell Latitude D410, neither of which are made anymore. These were the predecessors to the popular netbooks. My favorite netbooks are those made by Acer... I recommend and work on them all the time.

There's a reason... most people want Microsoft Office installed and don't have an external CD/DVD. Beyond the initial installation of that, an antivirus solution and some antispyware software, it seems to be a happy gilmore world for Acer owners. I'm sure the same holds true for those buying Samsung but I'll bet those buying the HP netbook knockoffs are disappointed.

As for XP... as much as I like it, I'm anxiously waiting with criss-crossed fingers for Windows7.
