Thank you so much

We have booked Sandos Playacar in Dec. I think it will be cooler then, and I am unwilling to make that drive to Chichen Itza, so we will be going to Tulum ruins instead. I especially appreciate the photos, and also the comments on Sandos Sister resort. I have heard some not so good things about odors on the ferry to Cozumel, if you don't mind commenting on that when you get around to posting again. I am also curious as to your take on 5th Ave. It is also encouraging to see you rebook Sandos so many times. Once again, thanks for your Trip Report.

I have not been to Playa in December - I think it will be cooler also, but definitely not cold!! Next year we may go to Tulum and Coba as well. As far as the ferry with odors, I did not notice anything strange - there are quite a few people packed together, so??? 5th Avenue....It's okay, definitely worth checking out, if you haven't been. There are stores that range from expensive American stores, and places like Senor Frogs, Coco Bongo, Carlos N Charlies, to Mexican people with little shops - all of them pretty much selling the same thing. The vendors can be a bit overwhelming (if you are not used to that), trying to get you in their store. I find it best to just completely ignore their calls and go in to the stores that I want to go in to. If they only knew that if they left people alone, more people would go in!! Beware of land sharks....if they ask how much longer you have on vacation, just say we leave in the morning - no matter what!! They will offer you money, excursions....yada, yada - BUT you will have to attend a timeshare presentation and waste a day of your vacation. FYI, Cigars on 5th are NOT cheap....When I was in Playa in '05, I liked 5th better then, because there were more "Mexican" stores, with people earning their living. 5th Avenue has also spread out, the side streets now have alot of stores as well. If there is something particular you are looking for, shop around (and haggle)...don't just buy at the first store you see, because generally, you will find it at many stores (unless of course, it's something handmade). Prices on 5th will seem fairly cheap to us Americans - but have gotten more expensive than they used to be. If you plan on going to Cozumel, I think it's cheaper there - I haven't been to Akumal, but I would assume cheaper there as well. Just like anything else, 5th Avenue has become quite popular and touristy....so........ There are several good places to eat, and everything on 5th and around 5th is "safe". I prefer to go to 5th in the evening, as it can be very hot during the day - the air kind of stagnates on certain parts of 5th, with only a breeze here and there (like when you hit the cross streets!). Cab rides to and from 5th from Sandos are $5... Next year, we are staying in town (Little Italy part of 5th), more just for a change of pace....and something different. Anyway, these are just my opinions, and I hope they help. Also, I have not spent any time at clubs on 5th, but some do look fun!

Sandos

We stayed there 6 years in a row when it was Gala and loved it. Now there are lots of changes and it seemed a bit crowded.

What a cool place, despite it's violent history!
