That is scary, I have lived in a large metropolitan area for most of my life and I can't recall a single friend or personal acquaintance who has been murdered.

But we lock our doors.

BTW, has anyone heard any details of what went on at La Rana Cansada a week or so ago.

I passed there many nights and was even near that area on the night in question.

I am curious to hear details as well.

I live in a very quiet, small pretty Canadian city. We have the largest concentration of prisons in the country and the worst of the worst in the country are incarcerated here. We have a hyper vigilant police force and you can't leave your car parked for an extra 5 minutes if your meter has run out without getting a ticket or maybe even getting towed.

There was an incident recently where a business man from Afghanistan killed his three daughters and his ex-wife (who was traveling with them and being introduced as his cousin). These women were killed apparently by him and his teenage son who locked them into one of the family's cars and pushed it into the water near the beginning of the Rideau Canal near the city. The elder daughter was bringing "shame" to the family because she wanted to date someone who was non-muslim and her father wouldn't tolerate that. For Kingston in particular, it was horrifying and for Canada this was front page news for days.

I have no idea how you could ever lose that many people in that period of (that's more than 1 per year) and still feel safe. I think bad things happen everywhere from time to time, but I can't imagine losing that many of my friends and acquaintances to murder.

I agree that truly living is the best goal but I hope you don't continue to lose people at that rate in the next 12 years.

I did hear about the woman in Isla Mujeres who lost her life, she sounded like she was living life to the max and my condolences to the many people in Montreal who held her close. I should have put this at the begging of the last post but I was distracted with the murder numbers.

Holy cr@p! Are you close to Little Rock? I've never heard of anyone losing that many friends or personal acquaintances that way....how scary!
I don't know anyone who's been murdered but I was once stalked by a murderer. That was bad enough. So sorry to hear that Playafava!

I live about an hour and a half due north of Little Rock, in the foothills of the Ozark "mountains"... A good friend of mine was murdered over a robbery gone bad... the murderer, or at least the one they caught, is the nephew of, and was raised by a man who tried to kill ME with an axe, after finding that I was dating his ex-girlfriend. A good friend's father was murdered, check book stollen... The murderer tried to cash a very large check at the local bank, and was promptly arrested. This was after another man in the same community had been killed and robbed, and his body driven into the local lake in his car. My nephew's old girlfriend's family was murdered, three of them I believe, by a disgruntled ex-boyfriend. Less than a mile from my house, a friends family members tried to get him to help load a body into their pickup, he wouldn't of course... called the police instead, to their disappointment. Less than two miles from me, an ex-husband shot and killed his ex-wife, shooting her through the window of her home. The children were present. After a "domestic dispute", a neighbors body was found in the river several days later... My daughter's boyfriend's good friend, a young man, was raped by three other men, then stabbed to death. They were not caught until another similar murder a few days later. My nephew was accosted by several men with knives on a rural road going to my sister's house during this time. Had his family not been with him, he probably would have gotten out of his car and likely been another victim. A good family friend was shot in the stomach by his father, and the police called it an "accident". should I go on????? This all happened within about ten miles of my home. My entire county has less than 10,000 residents. And get this!!! my family thinks it is unsafe for me to travel in Mexico.

edit: I have to add that I became pretty good friends with the victim at La Rana during my stay there in June, staying up watching "Lucha Libre" with him late at night, and discussing all sorts of things. He woke me up my last day there at 4 am so I wouldn't miss my flight. He was the last person I talked to in Playa. I have been devastated by hearing the little bit of news we have gotten about that. I understand the need for not spreading rumors during an investigation, but I'd really like to know what happened.

Oh wow...I'm speechless! sounds like a dangerous community to me. There's hardly any murders here in Springfield, MO (about 330,000 people) and any that do happen are usually family arguments gone bad but are far and few between. I can't believe your family thinks it's dangerous for you in MX.

BTW, AR has always scared me. When I was a kid we got lost on a country road in AR ....the music from Deliverence comes to mind...

I left halifax in 2004 and been there for like 9 years. I lived mainly at Quinpool towers and other private apartments up and down Quinpool road. I went to Dalhousie University and worked at the University for awhile as well.

Had a few scary moments on gottingen street on the notorious north side of halifax. One spell I had dated a woman from spryfield and she lived a rough area. A drug dealer lived in the same apartment complex and I have some fun stories about that

Anyway, sad to hear it has gotten worse

On another note, I have family living in PEI and my uncle told me that one of his neighbors is selling some property at a good price. I am SERIOUSLY thinking about buying it. I have very fond memories of PEI and would love to plant some roots there so to speak

Hi, yes small world i am 150 kms from there but yes you were in one of the rougher neighborhoods. I used to go to the nautical institute in the day time down at the north end, hollis street where all the hookers hung out, but that was years ago, now the northend is still as rough, gottengen street got worse for sure, theres alot of stabbings around there at night now, police hire themselves out as door staff for the bars, they make alot more than the day job....the property in pei is something like nova scotia you can get land for around 1000 an acre but not beach front or close to towns, lots of 20-30 acres gor 30 and up....sorry about off topic, but have you ever been to isla, i am planning with some friends to make a day trip there

Sorry, I have never been to isla before. I had a chance to go, but that was not the real purpose of my trip. I mainly went to playa (sept 6 to sept 17) for the food, shopping and night life this time round.

I live in Belize now and own a second home on the Island of Ambergris Caye. PLaya and isla have NOTHING over Ambergris Caye when it comes to natural beauty like fishes, sun, sea, diving and so on. Playa has better restaurants, shopping and nightlife (better dance clubs). I am only 1 hour away by plane to Cancun and 4-5 hours away to Cancun by private car from the Mexican border.

People always joke with me and say why do you need a vacation from paradise? hahaha!

My next trip I want to visit my relatives in PEI and old girlfriends/friends in halifax

Saving up as we speak

take care my friend....
