Isla Mujeres :(

I don't think this is the right place for this, but I can't post on the news forum. Caught this headline this morning reading the newspaper.

Canadian woman stabbed to death in Mexico

My thoughts go out to the famillies.

According to friends on the island he was her ex-boyfriend. Crimes of passion such as this are quite common here. This only made the news because she is Canadian. My condolences to her family and friends.

crimes like that are common in canada too unfortunately, but regardless they report most of them.

I didn't know the whole story which is partly why I didn't mention the subject in the title, because from what was in the article I didn't think it was worrysome, and didn't want to spook newbies etc.

I was thinking "good for her" (cougar), but not if he did away with her. Sounds gruesome.

Sound like he was mentally unstable. They thought he was drunk but apparently wasn't. this is a very sad incident. Especially after reading how much she loved her life on Isla Mujeres. It is no comfort I'm sure for her family and friends, but at least she was where she loved being... people get murdered all over the world every day. still sad

It was high profile on last night's Canadian national news and in the paper here today. No mention of boyfriend and thus will add to the negative perception of Mexico for potential vacationers and less rental income A very sad story !

Yes. The worst thing (apart from her tragic death of course) is apparently she was very well known in Montreal, and beloved as 'the spiritual leader of the blogging community' or something....so that will only add to the negative press.

'Crime of passion'...I hate that term, it's almost like it is trying to romanticize murder, somehow ... she only knew this guy for a month, according to reports. Very sad.

She sounds like a wonderful lady; artistic, sensitive, full of life..

Please do not let this worry you needlessly.

Unfortunately murder happens everywhere in the world. Murders of innocent tourists is a VERY rare occurence in Mexico and you should worry far more about tripping on a crumbling sidewalk, the ocean, getting too much sun or a possible hangover than this story.

You will have a great trip to Playa! It is very safe, the GPR is a beautiful resort, you will love the town.

Today's news in Canada...2 people shot dead in Vancouver area by police!!!...one murder in Calgary...not sure of how many dead or wounded in Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal!!!!! Probably at least 10!!!! How many murders in the USA yesterday!!! 50? 100?? 200??

I wonder how many Mexicans died yesterday at the hands of non Mexicans in California, Arizona, New Mexico, or the rest of USA.????

I heard about those two recent cases...that is terrible.

Both Winnipeg and S'toon sure have big native gang problems....it's one thing when they are 'just' killing each other, but when innocent children start dying, different story.

Don and I were thinking of going to Roatan in March...then we hear today about the man from here in our town of Martensville (ten mins north of Saskatoon) who was shot protecting his wife from armed robbers. Did you hear about them? He is the second Saskatoon man to be murdered on the island in 6 months! Considering we average only 6 murders a year in Saskatoon....and they were both innocent victims of violence, that is concerning, IMO.

I looked it up, and here is the travel advisory to Roatan...okay, so maybe we won't be going there.

Maybe Cozumel and Playa again?!!

I have lived in a very rural, peaceful area in Arkasas, USA for 12 years. I can count 14 friends or personal acquaintances that have been murdered in this area during that time. I rarely lock my doors and feel quite safe... I don't know what my point is, except bad things happen everywhere.. and it's better to die while truly living, than to live in fear of dying

That is terrible!

That is unfathomable to me....but there very low murder rate here. I am almost 40 and have never known anyone personally who was murdered.
