haven't had a chance to go down to the beach yet, just seen it on here , but it does look white! this week the water in general, even south, has been very white from all the sand churning I guess.
Tulum in 1996 was coarser and darker, and Playa was like Tulum is now looks like playa and tulum switched beaches

Found these post on tripadvisor today 1-22-10. Royal ”
Jan 22, 2010, 12:41 PM

Just returned last evening from The Royal. 1/14-1/21. Beach restoration was in front of Gran Porto Real entire week. The beach in front of the hotel is closed; however, a short walk next door to the Royal is a great beach. Many Gran Porto guests were upgraded to the Royal (for a fee) and not too happy about not being able to access the beach especially those with beachfront rooms! I was advised yesterday that the beach restoration will be in front of the Royal any day now (despite being told previously that there would be no beach restoration in front of the Royal) The beach in front of Wicky's is also closed. Had a great vacation - The Royal is the best!!

Just returned last evening. The equipment was still in front of Gran Porto Real as of yesterday morning - (we had an oceanfront room and had clear view of the beaches) That beach was closed all week and the equipment will be moving in front of the Royal any day now PER the staff at the Royal.

Hey all. Iīm currently at the royal playa del carmen RPDC and loving it.

Of scarier note my concierge just told me they are offering a free transfer to royal cancun because they are going to be doing some beach restoration on the resort starting this saturday (jan 23). They are expecting complaints. The beach restoration has been going one at the sister resort immediately to the south (gran porto). It is going slow (5 days so far) and isnīt something Iīd want at all.

Everything I read before I left made me think there was no work done at rpdc so I donīt know if this news is out yet. And I donīt know if my concierge is correct, but I canīt see her spreading such important information falsely.

So this is a shout out to TA members.

Iīll check back.

kw......

I dont get it. I have been following the progress and read the schedule on this site and tripadvisor and no where have I seen that they would be moving north of the pier!!!

Help!!!! Does anyone know anything about this? Thought they were moving to Playacar not north.

Well it wouln't be a proper Playa experience without trouble and accusations, huh?

I don't know if this relates to the curious work still going on near the GPR, but various entities in the local press are reporting now that GPR ownership in the form of Fernando Garcia Salvidea is under fire from the fisherman, who say that rather than removing the breakwater put in (illegally, it seems) some years ago by the GPR folks (as the same folks did in Cancun), they just paid off the beach recuperation people to bury it under more sand, and this is having some significant negative effect on the operations of the fisherman, evidently.

Some reports go on to say that Zona officials (those in charge of the beaches) are also having trouble with GPR moves to place beach chairs well out on the extended portions beyond what they are supposed to be able to use for such purposes, effectively trying to co-opt for private use what is guaranteed open for the public.

I don't know about all this, mind you, but am rather just noting what has now cropped up in media reports. Seems like the fishermen are hopping mad...

Anyone able to provide an update with regards to restoration activity in Playacar? Last I've seen, someone was kind enough to post an image of a breakwater extending out at the southern edge of Sandos. Where have the barges and pipes gone to? Playacar?

decided to move their chair and umbrellas beyond the original boundaries and the beach patrol came along and made them move back to their original spots. Very entertaining!

Felt sorry for Raciel, but he did a very good job of placating everyone. Lots of people using the public beach in front on Playa Maya and all the other hotels in the area between GPR and PM. Too hot to walk any further.

Took picutures this a.m. from the waterline and from the slope. I have pictures from last year from the same spots but can't post comparisons until I get home. The beach is huge.

Having a great time as usual and the staff are the same great people.

The chairs at the beach clubs will move out toward the shore soon enough.
The work needs to be signed off by the "powers-to-be", then the chairs and umbrellas can move. If further grooming is necessary, they don't want beach clubs in the way.
Also, a new video is coming up shortly to show that the chairs at GPR are not intruding onto the beach.

Guess they must have moved them again, presumably under such pressure. This is one of those stories in the point:

Glad to hear that last part! It's all an adjustment period, of course, which is to be expected...

The beach is open and the sand is soft!
I'm guessing the drop-off at the shoreline is being left to let nature takes it's course
This is probably the last update unless I can find a way to get close to the Playacar beaches

There is a path between the Riu Yucatan and Riu Palace Mexico. It is beach access for the Riu Tequilla. I have cut through there to get back into the Yucatan and don't remember any guards checking for wrist bands to get to the beach.
