Well, make sure you're sitting down for this shocker bit of news, folks.

Are you ready?

OK, another delay to the start of this project has been announced.

Yes, the same mayor who announced only a week ago that the Playa portion of the region's big beach recuperation project was to begin this past Monday, just prior to Thanksgiving, in Playacar, has now announced that the start of the project will be delayed until January. Reports (in Spanish) like the one here give reasons for the delay ranging from the protests of some who represent Cozumel interests (since that's where the sand in question apparently originates), to PDC properties with illegitimate structures in the water dragging their feet on the necessary removal of those so that the project can begin, to even the passing of Ida, which it is said led to the need to return some of the equipment to Veracruz.

Welcome to Mexico! Enjoy your stay.

Steve

Here is today's report regarding the status in Cancun:

Cancun's beach restoration, which started in September and is costing about $71 million, is now expected to be completed Feb. 10.

Two thousand tons of pipeline material was brought to Cancun, and the project is expected to transport 1.3 billion gallons (6.1 million cubic meters) of sand to replenish Cancun's beach along the hotel zone.

Adverse weather conditions have caused delays; as of Dec. 1, about 23% of the beach restoration was completed, according to the Mexican Tourism Board.

The work was originally scheduled for completion the first week of December.

Beach!

I can't wait to see what they come up with. I've seen the beach come and go south of the pier for years and hope to see 50+ yards starting at Sr Frogs by March. Any idea when it will start or be finished?

I flew over Cancun today and saw they already did about 2/3 of the stretch. It's obvious where they've been because the beach is now 4x deeper. There was a barge and big pipes so it looks like they are still pumping sand.

I hope they go to Playa next..

Beach Work

The hotel beach webcams are a great place to view the work. Nice and wide, similar to the beaches in SE FLA.

Happy holidays!

same here, but we've been through this cycle before.......there are no facts that support a different outcome. We may get a different outcome even though there is just no basis to predict it will happen.

Wow, there's been quite a change in Cancun. I thought they did the beach restoration a while ago? Or are they doing it again? Our friends stayed at the Mariott a couple years ago and the machines were right out front.

they did one a year or so after Wilma....22 million...all the sand washed out to sea again after. How much you want to bet the same thing happens again? You really can't fight Mother Nature...it's a sandbar.

here is a link to some pictures in front of the Cancun Palace. Was there last January and you could barely have a lounge chair on the sand. This is amazing!! More beach than when we first went to Palace in 1997.
