Playa/Playacar Beach Restoration

Just got word that the Playacar Beach restoration is now scheduled to begin October 19. The beaches should be fantastic this winter!

Not unless a big storm washes it all out to sea. Beach restoration is not a long term solution - more of a temporary fix.

Super - I don't know when it will be done. Where are you staying? I understand they are starting at the pier and working south.

BTW, there is a plan to keep the beach up. This is not a one and done kind of deal.

Be sure to let Mother Nature know that...... I hope they are able to restore the beaches but not at the expense of other areas and habitats.

Oh, and it will be interesting to see if it does start Oct 19th.

The sand is coming from off shore of Cozumel

EDIT: I found this on the World Wide Web

"The sand used in the beach replenishment will actually have to be mined or dredged up from the ocean floor, the primary area of this sand mining to occur offshore of Cozumel at a marine area known as the North Bank. The area is stated to be an area where the confluence of oceanic currents occurs in the Caribbean Sea that naturally causes the the build up of large sand deposits. The Mexican Environmental Agency has cleared the area for sand extraction despite protests on Cozumel stemming from fears of the North Bank area providing a natural buffer from hurricanes and tidal surges. The same agency has also shot down the notion the area is productive breeding habitat for the endangered marine species, the Pink Conch. The secondary sand extraction area is also a marine area offshore of Isla Mujeres and Cancun."

EDIT 2: This supposedly is the schedule for Playa/Playacar

September 21, 2009 - November 19, 2009: Initial placement and construction of breakwaters in Playa Del Carmen.
December 11, 2009- December 20, 2009: Beach Replenishment/ Addition of Sand to select beaches

EDIT 3: My bad...the above information came from Danger's Blog, , Cancun Casa,Living on Isla Time

not looking good. It would have been so simple by just not allowing to build on the sand dune. so sad, as always, noone thinks ahead. grab what you can and get out.

Would love to know what that is. Mother nature can have other ideas.......

Rick's findings are disturbing (even if they don't have a link)- I know dredgers (people who work on a dredge) and it is expen$$$ive, high impact work. I can't think of anywhere in that area that would be "safe" to dredge.
