New Overhead Highway

Work has begun on Playa's new "overhead highway". I believe that the original plans called for at least three overpasses to be built in Playa to help relieve traffic congestion. Theses were to be similar to the ones currently in operation in PA and currently under construction in Puerto Moreles. Now I have been told that an overhead roadway is to be built in Playa as opposed to the original overpasses. During the past week, work has begun on this new project. All palm trees and vegetation have been removed along the "medians" of 307 and cross lanes are being constructed running east-west across 307. The area of "deforestation" starts just south of Juarez (area of Chedraui) 1/2 way to Constituyentes. I have been told that an elevated (on pilings or concrete supports) roadway running from south of Juarez to north of Constituyentes is the current plan to relive the congestion on 307. So, we well see how things proceed..........

Yup, saw that going on last week, knew exactly what it was. Wouldn't want to start that at the END of high season, let's do it at the beginning so we can deter more people from recommending playa after they visit

Watching the beach recuperation and the highway projects is like watching a soap opera. You never know what's going to happen until it does. Unless it doesn't. Exciting stuff, thanks for keeping us updated.

I'm surprised to see it happening in the same decade as it was talked about too.

I guess they're not doing the Playa bypass after all.

I hope these flyovers have long slip lanes...

Looks like 10th and 30th will get busy.

The Playa bypass is overall complete. Driving south from Cancun, turn right at "Arco Vial" which takes you to Centro Mayo Mall and back on the 307 to Tulum. It's actually quicker than driving the 307 thru town and you will avoid the new overpass construction. Driving North from Tulum, turn left to Centro Maya mall and just drive!!!

Paw'boy..
Please allow me to disagree with you...this construction on all 3 overpasses will take at least a year, so, no matter what season construction starts, it will be noticable..Also, most visitors staying at the AI's or various condos don't venture out on the hiway except for any excursions they might make, so, I don't think that will turn anybody off..
The new Arco Vial is another option and I think that visitors may be impressed with the progress of Playa.......

I do like the progress of playa and the highway, but I also liked the old road when coming from cancum, It is becoming to look quite modern now, I think oldie worldie looked better.

Yes, I know that route.

I was referring to a plan from last year or so to build a real bypass that loops through the jungle past Playa and connects up again with the 307 by Xcaret. It wouldn't have gone through any residential areas like the one you refer to, but would have been open road.

The problem with the Arco Vial is that it takes just a long as staying on 307! (Except on the weekends)

Things might change but right now it's all the same. The abominable topes remain your worst enemies when trying to get to PDC.

The way that I understand it is that instead of 3 or more overpasses in Playa, there will be an overhead (or elevated) roadway on pilings that will run from south of Juarez to north of Constituyentes............time will tell.

I'm guessing they forgot to mention all this to the people who built the giant advertising TV screen on the corner of 307 and Juarez. They must be delighted at how it will be blocked out.

I particularly enjoy the sensation of temporary blindness while driving past it when it has a white background at night!

You're right ...this thing is annoying.

Do you think it will get elevated higher?

FWIW: Some business owners in PA were not thrilled with the overpass. I guess it's part of the "progress".

Maybe, then they won't need to turn on the football stadium lights.

I was very impressed how you still have to drive North and loopback to cross the 307. Some overpass.
