We went with Mitch last May on the Coba tour and it was great. We went on the day that all public areas were reopened after the swine flu and we were the only group on the pyramid at the time. If you want to go to Coba, Mitch is the way to go. The cenote we went to was very private and it's small enough that the tour busses can't go there. Make sure you drink lots of water as dehydration can set in pretty fast.

Thanks for the update. I've got a group going in December and I know the kids will be up for the climbing!

I went there on a tour and saw it and that was enough. I'm not trying to prove anything to anybody, and it is undoubtedly dangerous for older adults especially in the heat. I just don't much see the point. One misstep by anyone and you're on your way down with no stropping you. I took some pictures.

we were there last week. The weather was nice. At first I was not going to climb, but the girls wanted to climb so hubby and I went right behind them. It was awesome. Fantastic view from the top!

We were there last week as well. Climbed to the top with my 11-year-old nephew. He was so proud. I must have climbed up there about 10 times over the years, and every time I say it will be my last. But why go if you don't at least try?

That's what scares the you-know-what outta me about it, rickscott. And that's why we climbed up maybe halfway the day we went. There were just too darn many people on it that day (May '09), and while I'm pretty sure of MY ability to go up and come down in a safe manner, it was all the other "hurry-up-get-out-of-my-way" types that made me nervous as hell.

The view is well worth the risk, I felt too. Amazing!! I would do it again.

But yes, it is somewhat dangerous. Anyone who feels they are not capable, should not even try.

We were lucky that there were not that many people when we went. When we got to the top there were only 2 or 3 other families. But then more and more started getting to the top and that is when we decided to come down, before everyone else started to climb down. So while they took in the amazing view and took pictures, we climbed down.

I ended going back, too...and all was early/mid october. Went to Coba (and climbed, of course) on the very same day Hurricane Paula was supposed to hit! And the day before...Tulum. People in the water despite the oncoming storm (and was occasionally pouring that day). Have some videos on youtube I posted as Avanell.

I did this 2 days ago and still cant quite believe I managed it! Its not often I´m wary about something like this, as so many people do it every day without incident. However, I looked down halfway up the pyramid and that was a bad move. Got to the top ok, had to stay sitting down up there but, wow! What a view, what a feeling, such a buzz like you are on top of the world. And, as our guide described it, "like a cultural gift" as nobody can say how long it will remain open for climbing.

I was really nervous about climbing down but I waited for a gap, took my time and went down each step on my bum!

However if you have any apprehensions then think carefully before attempting this. I was really surprised by how scared I felt but I think that on other activities I have done (eg zip line, abseiling etc) you have a safety rope as a backup. Here there is none and its a long way down!
