Iberostar paraiso del mar/beach watersports.

Hello everybody,

After searching this forum we have found this hotel to be great for our holiday.
Still we have some questions for you, we are planning to go on may the 5th is it then a quiet or a bussy period (the wetter should be great).
I like to go out sailing , how about waiting time to sail with the hobby-cat and how long can you sail. The same goes for windsurfing and kayakking.
The beach is a bit rocky , is it good for snorkling or is the ocean to rough ??
If someone has some experience with this i'm happy to here about it.

Thanx.

Greetings from the cold and rainy Netherlands.

We stayed at the Iberostar Paraiso Beach/DelMar in August. At that time, there was about a 1-hour wait for the Hobie cats and kayaks. We didn't windsurf, so I don't know about that, but we usually saw sails sitting in the rack. The kayak sailing time was about 45 minutes at a time, but I think you could go longer if you went early or late in the day.

You might find it a little busier in May than we did in August. High season in the Caribbean is usually from late December through April, then gradually tapering off. (However, the Iberostar is very popular with Europeans, and they often vacation in the summer.) I don't think you'll have to wait too long for equipment. They seemed to have plenty.

We did snorkel a bit at the Paraiso beach, but the visibility wasn't great. Rocks weren't a problem, since there were enough large sandy sections, but the water was pretty rough. Made for great body-surfing, but not the best snorkeling.

There are lots of good snorkeling spots in the PDC area. Playa Maroma is close to Paraiso beach, and we loved the boat snorkeling trip there. We saw incredible corals and so many fish! You can see plenty if you are willing to take a short trip off the resort.

We really enjoyed the Iberostar Paraiso Beach/DelMar. I hope you have as great a time there as we did!

What was the name of this snorkel tour, how much did it cost, and from which resort did you purchase the tour?

Thanks.

Maroma tour

We bought the tour from Lomas Travel (the Funjet local reps, white pants/turquoise shirts) in the lobby of the Iberostar Paraiso. Several companies were offering something similar. Lomas called it the "Paradise Reef" snorkel trip.

It was $50 per person, which included air-conditioned transportation from the resort, catamaran ride to two different reefs, snorkel equipment, snacks and sodas, riding the spinnaker (wind conditions permitting), and all the beer and nachos you could consume in 45 minutes at the Maroma beach bar. An optional new snorkel tube was $1, and there was a $2 reef conservation fee that had to be paid in cash at the beach.

Playa Maroma is a beautiful white sand beach, with very little sign of habitation. The facilities include a cabana-style bar with swing chairs, plenty of hammocks on the beach, open-air restaurant with very good inexpensive Mexican food, bathrooms with showers, and incredible offshore reefs. We really enjoyed it and would recommend it to any snorkeler or beach bum. It is located about 10-15 minutes south of the Iberostar Paraiso.

Was the coral you saw different colors, or just different shapes?

Both. The reef looked healthy and the diversity of species was stunning.

It probably won't stay that way long... we saw a lot of people fins-down on the reef.
