best all inclusive near playa with kids/peanut allergy
Planning a trip with two adults and 4 kids in January. Looking for a very beautiful, laid back beach front AI that is close to Playa. Looking for beautiful grounds, room near beach and nice pools(some like to hang by the pool and others the beach) We want something very nice but not too formal. Also, good food is important. One of our kids has a peanut allergy and we are concerned about food safety. Any tips/hints would be appreciated.
Thanks! |

No matter which AI you would choose, the peanut allergy is going to be something you'll be dealing with. The best way to do that is to bring a card typed up in Spanish to hand to waiters and use at the buffet.
As far as the hotel choices, if you want to be close to Playa, you're limited to the hotels that are IN Playa and those in Playacar. In Playa, the one that fits the bill more than any other is the Gran Porto Real. But I really wouldn't say that it's "very nice". Nice yes, "very" nice - as in upscale, no (there will be varying opinions on this but that's mine ). There aren't much to the grounds either so I personally wouldn't describe them as "beautiful", the way I would if it was a more sprawling resort where you would walk through the grounds to get from one point to another. But for the location, if you're looking for close to Playa, it doesn't get any better - you're IN Playa. The resorts closer to or in Playacar that you would want to look into are Playacar Palace, Riu Palace Riviera Maya and the Iberostar Tucan/Quetzal. |

And yes, I have stayed there, and I've stayed at many other AI resorts in the area as well I also sell them, so I do feel qualified to state my opinion when making comparisons. But like anything, opinions vary, to each his own, what works for one doesn't always work for another - that kinda thing and all. I did enjoy my stay there - the main focus for me when I booked it was the insanely low price I paid, the fact that I wanted to be IN Playa and I wanted to make my teenagers happy by doing an AI resort. But is it "the BEST all inclusive hotel"? Sorry but I can't say that it is. |

I have also stayed at the Gran Porto Real and absolutely it's all about location!, location!, location! & price. IF I wanted to stay at an AI in town I would stay there again, but ONLY if my budget wouldn't allow to stay at the Royal across the street. GPR was fine. I wouldn't call it a resort, it's more of a hotel on the beach as there aren't any "grounds" to speak of, just hotel, pool, beach. They do have a couple of a la cartes, the buffet and the lunch beach buffet and they do have an entertainment team & kids club (small). The beds were HARD and the halls were LOUD and the buffet did not agree with my tummy (other's can chime in with more positive experiences at the buffet I'm sure), but for my first visit to Playa I was pleased to stay there to have been introduced to the benefits of staying in town. The next 5 times I went to Playa I stayed in town but not AI and have since spent 3 nights at an AI in Playacar that I would class as much more of a resort then the GPR.

so whats the BEST AI?
Ok, so let's hear. what is "the best" All-Inclusive in playa? By best I mean most beautiful grounds, nicest pool, best food. I'm interested in something on the larger side, that welcomes families, is on the water. something that you see and say "I want to stay there next time"

for an AI the Palladium is hard to beat. Several top notch pools, great food, unlimited ala cartes, everywhere you turn you see a different bar, great kids club, beautiful beach with great snorkeling! Check out the Palladiumaddict.net site for lots of info.

I stayed at the Iberostar Tucan/Quetzal last year and LOVED it! 30 minute walk to Playa del Carmen, there is a nice shopping area almost right across the street if you just want to do some quick shopping, or a 5 minute $5 cab ride to playa del carmen. We had a standard room on the 2nd floor and were VERY happy with the hotel. It is great for kids, too, as the wildlife is wonderful. We saw monkeys off our balcany quite a bit! LOVED IT!!!!
