beach in puerto vallarta vs playa del carmen

wife and I went on our first trip to mexico in january 2007. had a great week but weather was pretty cool. the beaches right in town were not as nice as we had hoped but we wonder if las caletas or yelapa`s beaches compare to the ones in playa?

Generally speaking, NONE of the beaches around Puerto Vallarta can hold a candle to the beaches along the Mayan Riviera coast. The one that comes the closest would be south of the city down at Mismaloya.

Where the sand is lighter and the water not so murky looking.

The sand in the Mayan Riveria is near to white and the water that gorgeous crystal clear Caribbean blue.

The MR beaches are also typically more swimmable, PV has that huge Bay of Banderas and the surf is rough at most beaches in town, although much calmer at Mismaloya, Yelapa, and there are some great ones north of the city too.

You might miss the little coves and jungly mountain scenery and sunsets, though....Playa area is flat flat flat.

We went to Puerto Vallarta a little over 3 years ago. Went to Playa last year in June... Loved it so much we returned in November!!! There is no comparison, You cannot beat the beaches of the Riviera Maya!

While they are 2 different experiences (Pacific vs. Carribean) Playa has much nicer beaches. However, PV has an old Mexico feel with much charm and mountains/jungle to admire/explore.

We like the beaches at Playa better. The water is much prettier, and the sand much softer.

I've never been to the Pacific but I hear its very nice, the atmosphere is very laid back. The beaches and sea perhaps not as beautiful as here but great nature! I hope to go check it out with my own eyes soon!

The beaches in the east are better than the west. The sand is white and the water is a bright blue in Playa del Carmen. I do like all the sand sculptures at Puerto Vallarta and all the vendors on the beach at Mazatlan.

We are in Puerto Vallarta right now and I can tell you Playa beaches win hands down! In fact I think some beaches in Michigan are nicer than these. Vallarta does have some great views with the mountains and beautiful sunsets. The warm, sunny weather isn't so bad either
