Bringing Alcohol from home in luggage on airline

My hubby and I will be staying at the RPDC and we have a special bottle of bubbly that I would like to bring with us in my luggage (we're from Canada). I do realize the hazards of a glass bottle in my luggage, that's not my question....but will it get taken out of my luggage by security or mexican customs? Or should we just not bother and spring for a bottle of domestic bubbly to be in our room when we get there? Our own bottle has some sentimental value which is why I want to bring it but I definatley don't want it confiscated!

Welcome to the PI. Never has been a problem for me. I always bring a bottle of triple sec for my marg's. I have had TSA open the bottle before and I had a little leak out. Since then, I put a note right on the bubble wrap that I have on the bottle asking TSA to please make sure the lid is on.

Checked luggage is fine. Carry on's no.

Roll it in some clothes and put it in the very center of the suit case. Or better yet, bubble wrap it. Customs WILL inspect it, then leave a little note they've done so.

WOHOO! I hear the Royal is a very nice adult only AI. Right in town too. Be sure and get off the resort occasionally and see the real PDC. Have fun! And fill that hole in your suit case on the way back with some nice tequila. (Or Mexican vanilla.) Or both!

If it is really that special, you may want to re consider. There is always a chance of it breaking, being confiscated or just come up missing . If your ok with that, then take it. If not, enjoy it at home.

I've traveled many times with one or two large bottles of rum and vodka in my checked luggage. As said previously, wrap it in your beach towels and other who-cares-if-it's-wrinkled clothes and stashed it in middle of your bag. AND... be sure to wrap it in a couple of Ziploc gallon freezer bags (use packaging tape to secure them together) JUST IN CASE there is damage. Why have the rest of your luggage contents reeking?? If it weren't a liquid of the bubbly variety, I'd suggest re-packaging it into a couple of large plastic (lighter) bottles, but in this case, I guess that wouldn't apply. (I now use large liter-sized bottles for my rum, vodka, and Bailey's.)

you might want to be alittle careful with pressurized stuff, just a bottle of rum is no problem, but you mentioned bubbly? what about altitude? i know stuff like dive tanks arnt allowed unless the valves are removed?

We just flew back from US with a bottle of bubbles in checked luggage, mostly because it is one of the things that is way overpriced here in PDC. Bubble wrap it and enjoy it when you get here.

Remember you can request to be present when TSA "screens" your luggage. I always do this when I bring ANYTHING of value, whether it be dive equip, booze, etc. After they snoop through my bag I lock it with a luggage lock that is NOT a lock TSA can open.

As for the booze breaking in the bag, I wrap clothes around it, then put it in the middle of the bag. Never had one break. If you are still worried, use bubble wrap.

Hey BugLady, as mentioned on this thread you can get some good bubbly in Playa, a bit over priced yes, but there is a nice shop on 10th Ave and 26-28th street area. Try Winery and Plus located on te corner of 10th.Avenue and 28th.Street, they have winer from 18 different countries.Good luck

Enjoy your trip , but the only sunsets you'll be able to enjoy will be from Cozumel.
