I started off with a pretty slow pace and ended up at the back of the running pack. But pretty soon I started passing people and moved my way up the ranks. There were a few little rolling hills, but nothing like what I'm used to on the trail, so it was pretty easy going until the monster after mile 2 I chugged up the bohemouth (thinking: holy hell, is this hill EVER GOING TO END???) and suddenly felt a serious cramping in my gut. Oh, crap There's absolutely nowhere around here to, well, crap Thankfully that subsided and I managed to make my way through the rest of the race unscathed, socks and gloves intact I opened it up on the final downhill and straightaway to the finish line and came in at 34:49 Good enough for me! Jeremy decided to run with me this morning and he came in at 33:34 WTG, babe! He told me he packed his faux pod full of metal to keep him motivated (he's still doing walk/run intervals).

The bar that was sponsering the race put out a great spread with sandwiches, veggies and chips so we munched on some food and enjoyed a beer before heading home All in all a great morning

I'm really glad to get that first 5K under my belt. I was actually really nervous this morning, not really knowing what to expect. I probably could have pushed myself harder, but I was worried about running out of steam and having to walk to the finish. There were only a little over 100 people regestered for this race, so it was a nice, small group. I think the next race out here is Memorial Day weekend- bring it on!!
Woo Hooooo!! First race report, and a great one! Nice work on not finishing DFL (Dead F&#king last)

I'm thinking I'm going to stop doing my tempo runs for the next month. I need to get lots of miles in. Around 20 a week running. If I can get that plus 2-3 times a week on the bike.(25-50 miles weekly) I'll feel like I'm getting some good weeks in. Ran 5 today in 50 minutes. Nice ez pace. Cold front moving in so a couple of the miles were pretty windy. It's suppose to be in the 70s Wednesday so I hope to get the road bike out.

The mountain bike has been a good decision because I'm getting out on that on days I wouldn't have got the road bike out.
Sounds like you're really packing on the mileage! Nice work! It's good to take time off of intervals every few weeks.

And great to hear you're riding a lot too! Glad you're enjoying your purchase!

Again, great job on kicking it down on the last mile!

Just completed the 5th percent of my yearly cycling mileage goal this morning.

On the road most of this week, so I hope to get two runs in and a lifting/plyo day in while hopping hotels. I'm doing well sticking to my workouts on the road! I have to, though, to keep up with my eating

Leadville update: I'm giving it a rest for a couple days and I'm basically going to plan the entire trip out and just show it to her and how cheap I can do it. I also learned that one of my old college teammates (wasn't really close with him, but we know each other) also won an entry through the same deal, so we might be carpooling. CHA CHING!!!

MTB question for PG.

Ok I'v got a MTB question. On the road bike I'm good at keeping my cadence right in the 90+ range. Is that where I should be for the MTB too? Or should I be lower for more power. Right now I'm keeping it high. Then when I hit a sand patch or have to brake for a sharp turn I can jump right back up to speed without shifting. If I was in a higher gear it seems I would really bog down and have to downshift.
12+ MTB ride today. Weather still cold.

Thanks David Just reading about your weekly plan is making me tired. Which makes it a great plan I think I need to kick things up a notch.........

Thanks PG- I'm pretty glad I didn't finish DFL

Great job working out on the road- that's hard to do. I think having a plan RTG for Bean will help your case. Especially if you show her it can be done on the cheap. Good luck!

I ride about the same cadence for both road and MTB, but a couple guys that I've ridden MTB with tend to ride lower cadences on MTB...but these guys are usually riding single-speed, sometimes fixed gear MTbikes too, so they're pretty hardcore, and their thighs are tree trunks. I suppose if you've got the power and are comfortable using it, go for it. But for me, I just like to spin my way through...

I was told though, that if you're racing, just pick a gear and stick to it if it works for you, and try to avoid shifting. Find one that will get you up most hills, yet one that you won't spin out with on flat sections.

All of our local trails have been closed by our mountain bike club for the first time ever. They were able to work out deals with all the land managers for all the metro area trails to gate-up all entrances to the trails to let them dry out properly this spring to avoid being tore up and require tons of work. And our longest single track trail is currently under water on the river bank, so we won't see that trail until at least the first week of May, if we're lucky.

At least the street sweepers finally made their appearance this week though!

it's dumping. you can always tell because the wind starts blowing around 80 mph. we are actually having gusts of over 80+ mph. hard to keep crap in the backyard. they've recorded gusts of over 140 mph at the top of the sierras.

nice spring break

way to get that mile time down. good for you.

Spring is springing around here... and not in a good way. My allergy enemy (trees) is starting to wage war against me and it. is. winning. I retreated to the treadmill last night and got in 3 miles in 33:30 (incline set at 1% the whole time). By the time I left the gym I thought my head might explode. This morning I'm fighting back w/ my full arsenal of allergy meds. Fingers crossed!

All of this biking talk makes me want to go dig my old mountain bike out of the shed in my parents back yard. Probably needs some tires and grease... but hey, Dad needs a project anyways, right? It just sounds like a good change of pace for when my shins/calves aren't 100%.

E! Heckuva pace yesterday! Very nice.

Probably going to end up taking this week off, we started building our garage yesterday, and between that and work, I won't be having any free time until 9 or so at night.

this will be a year where they're open through memorial weekend.
hey e, you motivated me to run a little faster with your mile times. so here i was in a blizzard blowing sideways with a serious side ache and feeling like puking. i ran 3 miles in 24:00 with my mile splits at 8:05, 8:25, and 7:30. i haven't really challenged myself yet to maintain a good pace. i've been happy with 9 and 10 minute miles. time to step it up. thanks for the motivation

Thanks. I'll stay with the high spin. The trail I'm riding now is mostly hard pack single track. I'm pretty much staying in the middle gear up front and 5 or 6 in the back. Only shifting a few times for the 3 mile loop.
Low 60's and sunny here today. As soon as I have my cup of coffee I'm hitting the trail for a 6 mile run.
