My chronic achilles tendinitis has been flaring up again so I'm going in to PT in a week or so. The only way I am going to break 7's for 5 this year is if I practice running hard, and I need a healthy achilles in order to do that. So proud of you, you almost became a real runnre today. The first time it happened to me I didn't have gloves on either. Fortunately I was less than 1/2 mile from home.

Yeah - except on my "off days" i have to be running, cycling, or swimming! Triathlon season will be upon me before I know it!
![]() ![]() I wish I came from a long line of runners. I come from a long line of eaters, drinkers, and opinionated know it alls (i mean that will all the love & respect for my crazy family )!!Quote:
Looking forward to hearing about some of your races. Tonight, I documented all my races from last year. I kept all my numbers and wrote the date, times, pace, etc on each of them. I finally put them in a spreadsheet. Fun to look back over 2009. 11 running races, 3 triathlons (2 minis and a sprint). Tomorrow will be my 2nd 5K of 2010 and I'm registered for a TON more. Also, just registered tonight from my women's sprint triathlon in September. I'm also going to register for the Warrior Dash in NY state. Warrior Dash | Home |

I think the achilles thing is something I will be dealing with my whole life, it first kicked in back in 2003 I believe. I just have to figure out how to take care of it better - hopefully PT will help give me some ideas. Although, I basically know that if I just run a steady pace on a flat surface, it will be fine. But what fun is that? Running fast or running hills hurts it. Running fast AND running hills at the same time (e.g. during a hilly race) destroys it. But I'll figure something out!

For me it is all mental. I slow the pace just a tick. It is really fun and motivating to keep a decent pace on hills as that is where you can really pass a lot of people.

Question related to caffeine and running for any of you java drinkers...
Long story short, but up until 10 days ago, I had consumed 2 cups of coffee in my entire life. I would generally do 1 diet coke in the afternoon maybe 3 days per week, and that was it for caffeine intake. Well, after I got in my car wreck last November, I started taking some anti-anxiety meds that have worked wonders to mellow me out, but make me very drowsy! I got to the point where I was having 3 diet cokes a day, including one right away in the AM or I couldn't wake up very easily at all. I decided all that aspartame was bad so I have switched to coffee. One cup right when I wake up (unless I'm going to run or lift in which case I have it after), another one after lunch and I feel awesome! I love it! Anyway, normally I like to run first thing in the AM, right after I wake up. Nothing to eat, just some water and stretching and I'm good to go. But, I have been a bit sleepy on my morning runs. So, should I have some coffee right when I wake up and then run 1/2 hour later. What recommendations / experiences have you had? I suppose I should get experiment but I want to see what has worked for others. Thanks! JG |

![]() I did my first brick workout of the season to day...kind of on a whim. Went to the club to swim. Got in a groove and finished my .6 mile swim and decided to keep it going and hit the tread. So a swim and a 5k run in 50 minutes with a transition! Quote:

As for the caffeine aspect, it's actually supposed to help you quite a bit. It's a banned substance in pros! |

![]() Nice workout! I need to get in the pool this week. The tough thing is Steve is without a car as his jeep is getting a new engine and we're waiting for it to arrive. However, the good thing is, I can run to the gym. The bad thing is I can't run with a backpack filled with my swim gear and a towel. Maybe I could ride my bike! Duh! Looking forward to getting good on hills. That's a good strategy you guys have - get good on hills and pass people! I like it! |

Race Report!
Event Bradley International 5K/10K - 15th Annual to benefit the Windsor Locks Lions Club
Location: Bradley International Airport, Windsor Locks, CT -- access roads surrounding the airport Terrain: Nice, newly paved, rolling closed roads Weather: Sunny, cool - mid 60's I would guess Time: 8:30 AM When I originally signed up for this race, I chose to run the 10K. Then, last week, I realized I have never run further than about 5.5 miles so why the hell would I race a 10K. Phone call to race organizer, changed to 5K. Phew! Woke up early. Had my pre-race fuel (Diet coke, some water and a granola bar -- ok, so I have a BIT of work to do on my nutrition). Got to the event at 7:50 - Pre-reg'd so I have plenty of time to get my number, hit the port-o-potty and stick my t-shirt in my car. Um.....no. The walk to the race was about a mile (ok, maybe more like 1/2 mile but it was still long) and the line for the potty was a mile long (ok, maybe more like a 1/10th but still wicked long). They had 3 potties, 401 runners. Brilliant. I waited in line to use the john after getting my number. I waited for 20 minutes. They announce - 2 minutes till race start. There are 5 people in front of me and I have to do more than pee. I figured, well, I'm here to beat my time from last week so I better just suck it up and get over to the start and jump out of line. I get over to the start, get some stretching in and they announce 2 minutes till race start (again)- "We're just waiting for a few more people". UM, would those be the people waiting in line for the john? You mean, I could run about 2 pounds lighter? ![]() Race start, everything goes well. Nothing exciting except the planes taking off around us (I love, love, love planes. It's in my blood so this was a fun place to run). About mile 2, I look down and see a glove. A lone work glove sitting on the road. I laughed outloud thinking of JG. I thought, "Well, if I really had to, I could use that glove"! Gave me a little boost of energy to keep going. Made it to the finish and was happy to see I met my goal -- beat my time from 3/14 (which was about 30 minutes). Came in today @ 28:51 (according to my watch). Pace works out to be 9:17. Still not at my best from last year but I'm OK with that! My best pace last year was 8:50. Question for my peeps -- Does the clock at races show the time from when the gun goes off? I'm assuming it does. Does my official time start when I cross the start line timing strips? If so, that's when I start my watch so my 28:51 should be close to the official time. Overall, had a great race. Had a big smile on my face most of the time because I knew I was running well. Enjoyed the hell out of the nice weather. Now, I have to clean the house b/c it's trashed and my sister is coming over later -- she'll provide a cleanliness report to my mother! Peace out! Rebecca

Yeah, Becca!! GREAT time
![]() ![]() Looks like it helped to have a little extra "motivation" (FWIW- and I freely admit that I'm nuts- I weighed myself before and after my morning, ahem, routine one day- and came out 3lbs lighter )JG- Glad you're back in the game! Nice start!! As per the caffeine thing- I only drink it on the weekends and I've had mixed results with it before running. Some days, I swear it gave me the worst cramping, and others it helped me get off my lazy butt and go. I've been trending towards afternoon running, because my body seems to do better then, so the coffee is pretty much a non-issue. Since I did my long run on Wednesday, my plan is to run 3 miles today, and 2 miles (for speed) tomorrow- plus upper body weights tomorrow. I'm working to increase my distance to at least 5 miles, so I think I'll follow that plan for the next couple of weeks. Mon- 3 miles, Wed, 4 next week, 5 the following, Sat 3 miles, Sun 2 miles for speed. Thoughts from the experts? In three weeks, I'll be in New Orleans and thinking that I won't be doing much running I did use mapmyrun to find some good distances from the hotel, just in case, though![]() As for everyone else- nice work!! It's too much to multiquote, but I always catch up on everyone's progress on this thread
