If yes, I would ice it then go for the compression socks. If no, I would stretch a lot, drink a ton of water, and probably still put my compression socks on and elevate my feet. No sexy compression socks in your house? I found that layering on three pairs of Alan's socks would produce a similar effect. I hope you feel better!!!
The spa sounds like the best option to me, too Hmmm (no, no- j/k- I don't have any bail money, anyways...) Compression socks (well triple socks) I can do- finally something I have! I did massage my legs- it's more of an all over cramping, no specific pain.

Thanks so much, guys!! I'm more concerned with recovering quick so I can keep working out- Wed is supposed to be my long (4 mile) day. Any thoughts on recovery time? I can suck up the immediate pain.

I decided to stop and walk the rest of the way (I was about 2-2.5 miles through the run). By the time I got back to the house I was having a hard time walking- my lower legs had really seized up Has this happened to any of you before? What should I do? Soak in a hot bath? Ice my lower legs? Break into a rich person's summer home and use their spa? Ugh.
I get sore/very tight in the Soleus muscle. To the point that walking is a bit difficult, but it doesn't bother me when I am running so I just push through it, and deal with the stiffness when I am walking. I've been stretching the soleus alot more, and that seems to help quite a bit.

Also I don't know if you have a company like this in the states that produces a similar product, but at the Spa we sell Sore Muscle salts, they are from a company called Rocky Mountain Soap Company and they are a natural product. They seem to work wonders in a hot bath, and the aromatherapy smells good too

Probably just muscle strain/cramping. I'd say just rehydrate and make sure to keep the electrolyte intake up as well. Then just get a rest day or two in with light stretching (emphasis on light if you have muscle pain) and nothing else on the lower limbs. Do some upper body and core workouts if you really need to do something. Both can still give you some really good cardio.

Are you drinking at all during your workouts? How much water are you drinking a day?

If I'm working out pretty hard (read: this time of year) I'm drinking about 2 liters a day, casually.

I've also started to develop something I've never really experienced: foot rot. Not as gross as it sounds, but between keeping my feet strapped up in my dress shoes during the week, then the wet/dry cycle during workouts, and the chlorinated pools, my feet are cracking on the bottoms and a bit between the toes.

I used to use Gold Bond powder on my feet and athletic shoes and skates in college to keep them from getting stinky. Going to start dousing my feet in powder every morning now too to see if it clears up.

Anyone else use powder? If you don't or haven't, seriously try it. I don't know why I ever quit. It feels so nice!!

Working on a couple reports for a bit, then heading to the hotel treadmill for a night cap run.

PG: I think you hit it on the head.....drinking water during workouts and run has helped me fight cramping. either water or gatorade type drinks.

Weekend update:

I didn't run Saturday, because it was too dark (and there are some sketchy people around where i live) when I got off work, so I decided best not to run by myself. Sunday morning which is normally my day off, I got up and went for a run. Decided that running in the morning is not for me. Way to slow, and ended up walking alot. However, later in the day I went to play soccer with a bunch of 20 something Colombians (males), I actually held my own, and could feel the work out this morning. Then today I did the 5km (3.1 miles) time was 31:10 (ran the whole thing) so a bit slower then Friday, but not to bad. When I got home I did 15 minutes of bicycle abs, and a couple reps of pushups, I'm going to take it easy for the rest of the evening. Maybe tomorrow I will try a glass of coffee (hate coffee), and see if it helps my running in the morning.

Well she's the one that mentioned the fact that she thinks she's a camel (running term! I meant it in the friendliest way possible ) anyway, so if she's only peed once today, that's a pretty good indicator. I think she kind of figured it out herself. I was just reiterating

I didn't really become a waterholic until just a couple years ago when my doc asked me about dehydration during a blood draw (my blood draw was going really slow and he asked me how much I drink each day). Like you, I noticed an immediate difference when I first started measuring how much I drink each day and raising that level; everything from recovery times to energy levels. Hard to believe that I went all those years so dehydrated.

Nice work! Soccer is a crazy workout!

I'm slowly getting back into working out in the mornings again. It's a hard hump to get over!

Stretching is something I've been really bad about I walk before and after my runs, but no formal stretching. I'll definitely start doing this regularly as I'm trying to increase my miles. And thanks for the info on the salts- I like the sound of products like that.

I don't drink during my workouts usually, but it was only a 3 mile run. I was only going to be out a little over 30 mins- do I really need water during that time? I easily drink 2L a day- and I drink before and after my runs. If I'm at home doing a dvd, I drink during the workout- but between the leash and the fauxpod, I don't have a hand free for water I already decided to drop lower weights- possibly indefinitely- due to my increased miles. My legs just can't really take it right now. I figure I can add them back in as I build up my running strength. No experience with powders/foot rot- but I know my friend had some issues when she was training for the SanFran marathon. I'll ask her what she did. I know she faithfully uses Gold Bond.

Well ok then. I guess maybe I should bring some water with me. Who knew?

Nice job, Mofi!! I hate running in the morning (or rather my body does). I do so much better in the afternoon.

edit: upon further reflection- my shins seem to be the major pain right now. I had shooting pains in them while I was walking down the last hill home. I'm also on my second 32 oz cup of water since being back- I think I eat too much salt

Not to mention that it is hard to find veins when you're dehydrated.......I don't think they'll need to use the baby butterfly ones on me anymore if I keep it up.....especially with lifting as I'm starting to get more vascular....I have a nice big wormy one going up my forearm they could stab in a heartbeat if needed.

You might want to rest the shins.....see how you feel on Wednesday and maybe move your longer run to Thursday? Just a thought. I don't know.....it seems there is always some wandering pain to deal with and I also notice that discomfort can travel from ankle to calves to hip at any given moment during a run. Weird. I've also had this sort of thing happen and wake up feeling better the next day....crap shoot. But don't mess with your shins and see how it goes on Wednesday. That is what I would do, at any rate.

Well, you are drinking quite a bit already, but they say to drink an ounce every 10 minutes during running. Worth a shot, I guess.

Thanks for asking your friend. I'm now going back to being a faithful GB user

Yep, Bean used me to practice starting IV's for one of her classes and she said it's basically cheating to use my forearms

I agree. Rest is the hardest thing to do once you get over the hump and start feeling great.

I'm going to play Wed by ear. Tomorrow was already scheduled for upper and lower weights. I'm nixing the lower and going to do some core work instead. I don't know why I scheduled my runs for M,W,Sa,Su- Tu,Th,Sa,Su would have made more sense

I can't run in the morning. No way no how. My body just says "no." I envy people who can.

Omg. Don't push thru that pain. Seriously. Don't make my mistake!!! Those how ever many weeks I had of not running and then having to gradually ease my way back in were the most annoying, frustrating, angering weeks ever. If your shins hurt, ice them multiple times per day, compress them, and rest rest rest. Shin splints suck.
