Ran this morning instead of biking.
Went about 4, but tried to experiment a little with changing my gait/stride. I'm really thinking about trying to start doing a run here and there barefoot, so I'm practicing eliminating the heel strike from my stride. Everywhere I read says that it takes a long time to build calf and ankle strength to go without the cushioning, so I'm trying it a little now. Basically, I'd go two blocks with my normal running, then go one or two blocks without striking my heel. Basically feels like I'm running on my tip toes at first, but I eventually started to figure out how to land flat footed and to not fully extend my legs. It is really going to take a lot of practice to make it second nature, but my legs felt really good when I was done. Worked a lot of different muscles, and my knees don't have a bit of soreness. My calves will definitely feel it later though ![]() And, I'm proud to say that I almost became a true runner this morning too, JG. I I'd have had direct access to gloves, I'd have pulled over for sure. Way too close of a call

Just checking in. Great work in the tri's Becca. Still only getting 2 bikes and 2 runs a week in. Also got some lap swimming in this week. Been busy doing yard work and maintenance on the house. Did get a 20 mile road bike in last week with a guy I use to ride a lot with a few years back. He's in his early 70's and kicks ass. The last few winters he's been going to either Cancun or Hawaii and training with groups of pro cyclists and triathletes. He'll average 20+ for over two hours. A few years ago he crashed racing with a group around the Cancun Bullfight ring. His bike computer had him at 26mph when he crashed. Anyway, I kept up with him pretty good so at least my bikes doing ok.

I love watching the "master's" level races around here just to see the old guys still woop it, and by old I'm talking the age you're talking there. Lots of guys in their 60's that still set tempo during group rides around here. I've heard of those pro cycling training programs too in Hawaii. It's almost like a tour group, but it's a long training ride around the island. It's freaky crashing that fast too. Hard to believe a 70-yo can still take it! This was last year's 4th of July race at about 28 mph after a guy's rear wheel slid out from under him right ahead of me as we went around a downhill corner and swept me out too. ![]() It was more burn than scrape. Our local criterium races last year averaged around 25 mph (10-15 miles in short laps)...and that's the beginner category races. And hurray for the TDF!!! |

![]() ![]() hey - you should check out the Vibrams 5 toes or 5 finger toes or whatever they are called -- for barefoot running. And, you MUST go to the library and get that freaking book "Born to Run". I'm telling you. It is calling you! Me: After a night of drinking (which I hardly ever do), I woke to a full blown heat wave coming into CT. What's even better is my cross country race series starts tonight. 2.6 miles of hills, grass, and sweltering heat. Starts @ 6:30 and NOPE it's not going to cool down by then. It's actually going to get hotter!

Hey - anyone ever hear of CrossFit? A new cross fit gym is opening up and a friend of mine is very involved with it. He wants me to check it out. I've heard it's like P90X on steroids. Will let you guys know if I do it. |

![]() ran a 5 miler this morning more or less to detox from yesterday. spent the day at the lake drinking beer and caught the numerous firework shows around the lake. the casino show is always the best even though the tahoma/emerald bay show was pretty good too. |

Lame-O!
Ok - I had a horrible race and I actually DNF'd
It was around 95 degrees (even @ 6:30) and the majority of this CC race is in the sun. I got about halfway through and almost threw up from dehydration (I was dealing with, let's say, gastrointestinal distress, most of today but was too stubborn not to at least attempt to race). I knew I had to stop when I was starting to get that woozy, where am I kind of feeling. I think it was the right thing to do.Tomorrow, I have the mini-tri. I'm not going to go for a PR b/c it's supposed to be another record breaking heat. I'm also not going to wear my wetsuit b/c I'm sure I'll overheat in the water with it. I need help with hydration. How do I hydrate without over hydrating to the point of having to pee during racing? I typically only drink water for hydration (no Gatorade, etc). I read in a triathlon training site that sports drinks have something like a diuretic that makes you body think you have to pee when you don't. I've also been trying to hydrate with fruit throughout the day. Am I drinking too much water in too short of time and need to stretch it out throughout the day so I'm not cramming? |

As for hydration, the general rule that I learned and use is a liter of water an hour before the race (meaning, finish it 60 min before the gun), then another 20 oz here and there leading up to it. Try not to pee until the absolute last minute before you need to line up. This is the beauty of chip timing, because you don't have to be right on the line at the start to get your official time. You can lolly right up to the line whenever you want (within reason, of course ), and actually hit it running if you have to wait long enough at the porta potties ![]() For my tri a couple weeks ago, I had two 1 liter water bottles ready to go for me right when I woke up. I drank the first using the rule above, then actually went on to finish half of the second with about 20 minutes to the start, peed, then took a few more swigs as I got undressed and ready to run to the lake for the gun. There are a ton of articles out there about race day hydration if you try a google search. It seems like Runner's World publishes a story about hydration every month too
