More hot running:

We went up the road to the major exchange (Where the first van of runners #1-6 hand off to the second van of runners #7-12. TONS of people everywhere, but it’s really fun to see all the cheering:

Forrest is back after his leg. We talked to him later on when we stopped to eat at the same place. He’s 72 years old!! And has run over 20 marathons since he turned 60!!! He said it’s awesome because he always wins his age category…because he’s the only one in it

Handoff to Van 2 and we’re done for 5 hours!

Here’s our van at almost every major stop. Had to dry out somehow!

This was somewhere earlier but I'm sticking it in now. We tried to get festive at an exchange, but got shot down by the safety crew shortly thereafter for being on the road L

Our last full dual-team pic before the end of the race

With Van 2 taking the baton, we get a chance to rest and eat. And eat we did!

Unfortunately, every other team had the same exact idea, and we weren’t exactly in a booming metropolis with a lot of options to eat. Our double cheeseburgers and fries took almost two hours to get to us…but luckily the beer and water were readily available.

I had two small beers and four glasses of water, then pounded my cheeseburger and fries like they were a snack. I drank two full liters of water (I used my nalgene to measure), a 20 oz gatorade, and two GU gels to boost the electrolytes back up leading up to my second leg which started at about 11:30 pm. but didn’t pee again until about 3 in the morning…2 hours after my second leg. Yes, I was severely dehydrated.

I lathered Icy Hot all over my knees and calves, and I can honestly say that I think that helped me the most in staying loose and from getting too sore between legs.

I'll continue on with the night pics and my second leg running tomorrow night...

Nice report PG. It would be a lot of fun to do something like that.

1. Awesome nipple shot. You are hot. I would say "don't take that the wrong way", but you can take it however you want.

2. It doesn't look like that many teams, maybe 25 or so? I suppose that is still 300 runners.

3. Were you actually leading for a while, it sounds like? Cool.

4. Very funny about dingbat and his 2 shirts.

5. Very cool about Forrest. In my first marathon, I lost to 1/2 of the women over the age of 70, 2 entered and one beat me.

6. That weather sounds just awful.

7. Burgers, fries, and beer don't even sound good at that point knowing that you'd have to run again, but I suppose it is a team bonding type of thing.

Great job and keep it coming!

It is, by far, the funnest running event I've ever done. Highly recommend it to anyone! Beginner or advanced runners alike!

Taken appropriately, I think

~25 started at noon, but they start sending teams off at 8 am all the way through 2 or 3 pm every 20 minutes. There were over 300 hundred teams this year at this race!

The Ragnar Race in Utah (the original race) just closed registration for next year with 1,050 teams!! I can't imagine having 3 times the number of runners at the Great River race

Only out of the chute

There were 4 ultra teams starting at our time slot and they blew us all away with about a 6:30 pace the whole day. Like I said, I came up on one of them when they collapsed ahead of me. He ended up dropping out and the rest of his teammates had to cover his legs in addition to their own. No big deal for those guys when you're already running 40+ miles, what's another 5 or 7 miles to it?!

4. Very funny about dingbat and his 2 shirts.
It was the weirdest thing ever. He had to wear a compression shirt and another shirt over it. Even his best friend that invited him on the team this year made fun of him.

Whatever...

He was a really cool guy, and very fun to talk to briefly at dinner. He probably ran a sub-8 pace the whole time too from what we judged in his first leg...

6. That weather sounds just awful.
Like I said, I've never been that hot before...worse than Grandma's Marathon in 2006 even (the one I was told to stop at mile 23 ).

Amazingly, we all thought that it sounded delicious, and all agreed afterwards that it wasn't the smartest decision of the night. But, since we started at Noon, none of us had eaten lunch. We'd been living off of granola bars and GU gels and gatorades since the start, and it was now 7 pm, so any real food we could get our hands on sounds great.

You don't mess with 6 hungry (unshowered) runners...

PG - Loving the report! The tights probably didn't do much to help with the heat! I can't stand running in heat when there isn't any shade and it looks like there wasn't much! Must have been brutal! I needed to hydrate just to look at the pictures!

Unbelievable weather today - AGAIN! I went for a MTB ride with my friend, Sean and friend of his. Hubby couldn't ride because he has a torn rotator cuff that is being operated on on Thursday.

Ride was about 7 miles in length and very, very technical (very, very, very technical -- wow -- did I mention it was technical?). It was so much fun. Lots of climbing, rocks, single track, and lots of stuff to grab your tires and slam you to the ground! Luckily, I didn't crash but Sean crashed hard and slammed into a tree. He now has two HUGE lumps on his arm that look like additional elbows - he says they're actually his testicles that shot up to his arm as a result of the force of the crash. Nasty!

I have come to realize that I swear like a trucker when mountain biking. The F word is used quite frequently in lots of different forms -- adjectives, nouns, verbs, adverbs. You name the grammatical term and I've got a F bomb to match it. Seems my favorite is f-ing f-er. Nice. Such a lady!

Hope your weather is as good as ours is!

Yeah, in hindsight it wasn't a good idea at all. They really didn't trap too much heat since they were fishnets, but I could tell a difference as I peeled them off when I was done.

I HAD to wear them though...team spirit and all that

Sounds like a really fun ride! Once I got the hang of riding MTB again a couple years ago, my racing buddy took me on my first real technical trail. They really teach you that you're not in that good of shape, and you use a ton of those balance muscles you forgot existed. So much fun!

And glad you didn't crash too

I don't really swear much in cycling, but hockey season is around the corner, and my hockey mouth really flies out on the ice...

Swam today for the first time since June. Just went to go, no target except for time. Ended up with a 45 minute workout. Started to work on breathing to the left as I usually only breath to the right, and I was surprised how rusty I was at it.

My shoulders are already tightening up, but it felt great to swim again.

Happy Labor Day!

Two days off this weekend. Yesterday was a scheduled day off. I spent 4 hours closing the pool. Got it all cleaned and the cover on. Today it was overcast and rainy, and I just didn't feel like working out. Spent most the day playing on the X-box. Back to the trails tomorrow.

I ran in the rain today. I can't remember having ever done that before. There was a little drama happening and I decided that instead of wallowing and wishing I had a punching bag... I was going for a run. 3.25 miles in 30:36. Not too shabby. Oh and when I got home I bit the bullet and ordered this shirt that I've been himming and hawing over for a looooooong time...

Yesterday Mom and I went for a 5 mile hike in Tettegouche State Park near Lake Superior. We had a good time and it was challenging in some places. I've been in that park many many times (spent many summers in the area as a kid) and hiked a lot of the trails but I've never hiked the trails on the back side of the park before. It was nice to discover something new amongst all of the familiar.

I hope you all had a great holiday weekend!

I love running in the rain! But, I love running while it's snowing much more.

My wife's uncle went hiking up in Tettegouche this weekend too! He had some very beautiful pictures up on Facebook yesterday. I've yet to hike that area at all, but can't wait to do it with the kiddos in a few years.

Love that shirt too! That's where I got my mantra I posted a couple pages back...

I am VERY sore from swimming yesterday. I think I pushed too hard right off the bat. Should have eased back into it a little better. My neck is very stiff from turning my head a different direction; I should've known better to have gotten so lopsided in favoring only one side

It is beautiful around there. The maples are starting to turn colors already! I was using Mom and Dad's camera when we were hiking. I'll get the pictures next week when they get home from their vacation (staying at their cabin up there).

Hope you recover quickly!

Hey Becca! Where's the Tuesday weigh in?!?! I'm DOWN 1.5 lbs!

Oh and nice race report PG! Love all the pictures. I saw the picture of the old guy and immediately thought of Forest Gump... then I read your caption!

I can't believe how fast fall set in! Our cottonwoods are already turning as well, and they're usually a bit later. Completely green last week to turning over the weekend

eekend!
Nice work! Running in the rain makes you tough and puts hair on your chest.

I also like to run when I am stressed!

Agreed (go figure).

I was UP two pounds for the week, so up 1 pound overall. It was a brutal 2 week stretch for social events, though. I worked out very hard this week, but ate/drank too much. I should be able to kick it down this week.

So far so good today, healthy eating and one heck of a workout this AM.
