Wow! I check in and find out practically everyone is injured! Injuries suck and now I'm dealing with tennis elbow from working so much on the damn computer. No excuse for not doing cardio though!
I haven't been around much because, well, I haven't been working out much. I'm really struggling to get back on track. Since losing my mom, I've been a bit off my game. To be expected, sure, but seems to be getting worse, not better. I think not working out is definitely impacting my ability to work through my grief. Like Kalleigh said, working out is a stress relief and if I don't do it, I find I kind of start to lose it! ![]() So, yesterday, I stopped feeling sorry for myself and got off my ass. I went for a 45 minute walk with Steve and the mutts. Then, I went to the gym and got on the treadmill. I did a 5 minute warm up and then ran for about 10 minutes, then did a steep incline walking workout. Total treadmill time was about 25 minutes. Then, I moved to the elliptical. I was on there for 20 minutes and I did the "fat burner" workout. I felt fantastic when I got home. Physical exertion is definitely a cure for depression for me. I need to keep it going. Plans for this weekend are: Friday - A friend from NYC is coming to stay the night with her 2 year old. So, no evening workout but I may sneak out @ lunch to do a walk/run/walk. Saturday - We're taking the 2 year old for a walk @ a park but that won't be very demanding so I'll have to go out later for walk/run/walk. Sunday - Wide open -- perhaps a mountain bike ride? Even a sissy one? Peace my friends! |

Skiers in the hizzzouse?
Hey - any skiers, snowboarders on here?
I'm a mediocre skier but have a sister who works in the ski industry so I have no excuse for not being a killer skier. (I can ski for free @ her mountains). Soooo..this year, I'm going to join a ski club. $30 and I get tons of discounted trips -- like $40.00 bus + lift ticket to some awesome mountains here in New England. Right now, I ski on snow blades (little short skis) but I'm going to go back to 150s. I love the snow blades but they are slower than regular skis and we don't use poles. Makes it tough on flatter stuff - like getting to lifts and I'll be skiing with people who don't ski the blades. |

Glad to hear you worked in an ice breaker workout. They are usually the hardest to start, but they get the juices flowing pretty fast again. Sissy MTB ride...ha! I have a feeling that your definition of sissy would put half of my roadie friends' definition of a MTB ride to shame!! ![]() Quote:

My crazy MTB racer neighbor does a lot of XC skiing, and kept on inviting me to go, but I don't have skis. He surprised me last winter by showing up with an old set of skis and boots he found at a thrift shop, specifically for me so he could have a skiing buddy. I've only gone once though ![]() Might try to do it more this year for something new, but we'll see. Got two really nice, quick 30 minute workouts in this week before work. One day of pushups and back accessory muscles with dumbells, then another day with a little longer kettlebells and arms/shoulder workouts. Might get a little warmer again this weekend, so hopefully I can sneak in another road ride again. I need to finish staining my deck something fierce though, so we'll see if I get that done first ![]()

You should do some more XC - it's a killer workout. I was thinking of getting snowshoes and running in the snow...well, maybe I should start walking in the snow. ![]() I love working out with kettle bells. I still want to try the CrossFit workouts. There is a (very expensive) gym not far from me that just does CrossFit and the do BJJ (Brazilian Jui Jitsu -- or however you spell it). My friend is really into BJJ (not be confused with BJs -- which I'm sure he's also into receiving...oh never mind... ) and he also does the CF and loves it. I saw their website and the workouts look SICK but also look really fun. After my elbow heals, I'm going to check them out. They work with a lot of cops, prison guards, athletes -- so I'm sure they'll kick my ass without me even asking. I need a drill sargent to push me. I can't be hand held...you know what I mean?

Glad to see you back, Becca
I was going to send you a pm, but I decided to post this here in case anyone else is ever in a similar situation. I went through a bad period workout and diet wise when my dad, and then mom died. (I also had a tough time mentally, obviously, which is what led to the poor diet and exercise). I just didn't have the motivation to work out, and we bought a lot of takeout because we didn't feel like cooking. Even though working out is my therapy, and makes me feel better, there was just a period of time where I couldn't do it. I had way too much else on my mind. And it did get worse before it got better. I think I was in shock at first, and it took time for the finality of the situation to set in. I'm so sorry that you have to go through this, but please don't beat yourself up over missing some workouts. Your body (and mind) may just need a little break. You'll work out when you can, and eventually you'll start to get back into feeling more like your old self. (((HUGS))) If you think a weekend getaway is what you need- the Vineyard is beautiful in the fall, and I'll even make Jeremy clean up the brewery for you guys ![]()

With losing my mom, it's very different. It's like I've buried my emotions. My brain won't even allow me to think about her for more than a few moments and then it forces any thought of her out of my mind. Very, very strange. I can't even sit and think about the good times -- the memories don't last for more than a few seconds. My friend said it sounds like I have almost an emotional block to protect myself. She also suggested I see a grief counselor. Probably not a bad idea. Now, if you were to see me in person, you wouldn't think I was depressed. I can still laugh and enjoy myself with friends and family. I'm still getting up every morning and not laying around having a pity party. But, it's like depression is just there at the surface. I don't know, hard to explain. I really appreciate you sharing with me. It means a lot and I just may take you up on that offer someday to come out to the Vineyard! |

Every death is different and we deal with them in different ways.
Know that we are all thinking of you, and that many of us have experienced losses similar to yours. Even though each is different, there are some commonalities. Accept some comfort in that community and also know that our tears flow for your pain, even though we may only feel a ragged corner of it. Damn tears lead to a stuffy nose. PS - a friend once wrote me about her loss, saying "I don't want to belong to your ****ing club. Truth is, we all join the club, eventually. |

Hey all,
I haven't been on as much the last couple of weeks, as it was advising season at school. and I met with a bunch of students regarding course selection for the spring. First off, hugs to my friend Becca and thanks to others for giving her support. Second, boo to PG and Neil for showing pics of snow, although I was pleased to see Neil bash the dreadmill. I hadn't been losing weight (too much eating and drinking), so I did my 7 day veggie soup diet this week - I posted it below. Yesterday was the start of day 6, and I was down 8 pounds, this AM was the start of day 7 and I was back up a couple pounds (too much meat yesterday probably). Still down 6 pounds for the week though. I am going to continue on for at least a couple days next week, and then do something else hard core so I don't gain it all back. I have been getting my workouts in, and even did a couple mile repeats this past week. However, I think this lack of weight loss thing is going to derail my plan to beat Jimmie (just 25 days from now). I am going to give it a go, but am not confident. I am in worse shape than last year when I ran 7:38's (although I could have run about 7:25's if I pushed it). I think my realistic goal is sub 7:30's. I am loving this weather for running though! JG Sacred Heart Medical Diet This 7-day eating plan can be used as often as you like. If correctly followed, it will clean out your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well-being. After only 7 days of this process, you will begin to feel lighter by at least 10 pounds and possibly 17 pounds, and experience an abundance of energy. SOUP:
This soup can be eaten anytime you are hungry during the week. Eat as much as you want, whenever you want. This soup will not add calories. The more you eat, the more you will lose. You may want to fill a thermos in the morning if you will be away during the day. DRINKS:
DAY TWO All vegetables. Eat until you are stuffed with fresh raw, cooked or canned veggies. Try to eat green leafy veggies and stay away from dry beans, peas or corn. Eat veggies along with the soup. At dinnertime tonight reward yourself with a big baked potato and butter. Don't eat any fruits through today. DAY THREE Eat all the soup, fruit and veggies you want. Do not have a baked potato. If you have eaten as above for three days and not cheated, you should find that you have lost 5-7 pounds. DAY FOUR Bananas and skim milk: Eat at least 3 bananas and drink as much milk as you can today, along with the soup. Bananas are high in calories and carbohydrates, as is the milk but on this particular day, your body will need the potassium and carbs. Proteins and calcium to lessen the cravings for sweets. DAY FIVE Beef and tomatoes: you may have 10 to 20 ounces of beef and a can of tomatoes, or as many as 6 tomatoes on this day. Eat the soup at least once today. DAY SIX Beef and veggies, eat to your heart's content of the beef and veggies today. You can even have 2-3 steaks if you like with green leafy veggies but no baked potato. Be sure to eat the soup at least once today. DAY SEVEN Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juice and veggies, again, be sure to stuff yourself and eat the soup. You can add cooked veggies to your rice if you wish. By the end of the 7th day, if you have not cheated on this diet, you should have lost 10 to 17 pounds. If you have lost more than 17 pounds, stay off the diet for two days before resuming the diet again. This diet is fast. The secret lies within the principle that you will burn more calories than you take in. It will flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well-being. This diet does not lend itself to drinking any alcoholic beverages at any time. Because of the fat build-up in your system. Go off the diet at least 14 hours before any intake of alcohol. Due to the variety of digestive systems in individuals, this diet will affect everyone differently. After day three, you will have more energy than when you began, if you do not cheat. After being on the diet for several days, you will find that your bowel movements have changed. Eat a cup of bran or fiber. Although you can have black coffee with this diet, you may find that you don't need caffeine after the third day. The basic fat burning soup can be eaten anytime you feel hungry during the seven days. Eat as much as you wish. Remember the more you eat, the more you will lose. You can eat broiled, boiled or baked chicken instead of the beef. Absolutely no skin on the chicken. If you prefer, you can substitute broiled fish for the beef on only one of the beef days. You need the high protein in the beef for the other days. Continue on the diet as long as you wish and feel the difference both mentally and physically. DO NOT - DO NOT No bread, alcohol, carbonated drinks (including diet drinks). Remember, absolutely no fried foods. DO - DO - DO - DO Drink plenty - at least 6 to 8 glasses - of water a day, as well as any combination of the following beverages: black coffee, unsweetened fruit drinks, cranberry juice and skim milk.

JG - thanks for posting this diet. i need to kick start my weight loss too. I really want to drop some pounds before Cozumel in a month or so. I'd very happy with about an 8 pound loss. Which is funny because originally my plan was to lose 16. OH WELL! Nothing I can do about the past! Just keep pushing forward, right?
Heading out for a hike with the mutts and my hubby. (EDIT: I just read this diet to Steve. He's ready to try it but did say "I don't know about hour long hikes in the woods without a roll of toilet paper on this diet". LOL!) Last edited by u2girlie; 10-31-2010 at 10:55 AM.. |

I've never done a diet like that but I am soooooo on this one. I need it. I'm sure I'll be checking in daily to whine about some craving or another... humor me, please.
![]() I'm a little off my game still. The hip flexor needs to be rehabbed I think. It feels fine most of the time, but after a workout it is ANGRY. I need some running therapy. Becca, I think seeing a grief counselor would definitely be beneficial. Even if just once or twice. Sometimes a new (educated) perspective really helps. Edited to add... so instead of running therapy I decide to go for a little doggie therapy... meet Chubby, our new dog! (in the arms of his current foster dad)
