JG's Frozen 1/2 Marathon Race Report

Friday night - Carbo loaded with 3 beers and smoked weenies at the campus pub, and a couple glasses of wine and beef stroganhof at home. Once PG said he wasn't running, I figured I could slack off a bit.

7:30AM Saturday - My alarm goes off and I start my race day ritual of putting on sweats to take a walk around the neighborhood and get a feel for the weather and to "loosen things up" a bit.

7:33 - I take one step into my driveway and realize it is a sheet of ice. So much for the walk.

7:34 - 8:19 - Get ready for the race/peepmeet, constantly exclaiming "It is a sheet of ice out there!" I awake TG from her slumber and demand that she also expresses amazement at the ice.

8:20 - Leave home and drive slowly to the race. After I got out of our neighborhood, the roads were fine.

8:50 - Get my bib number and stretch out.

9:04 - Walk to the start when someone grabs my arm and says "JG?". Kallileigh1 recognizes my Nerak beads. A quick hug and a promise to meet up later.

9:05 - Horn goes off to start the race.

9:07 - Late as always, I cross the starting line.

Mile 1 - I quickly remember that PG told me there were pace groups on the course so I decide to try to track down the 8:23 pace group (1:50 overall goal for them). I hit the first mile in about 7:15, but it is a lot of downhill. I'm flying past everyone.

Miles 2 - Flying past slower pace groups and I can spot the 8:23 pace group up ahead.

Miles 3 - Catch the 8:23 pace group and realize I'm running very hard, too hard in fact.

Mile 4 - Check my watch and given that I started late but caught the pace group, I'm running a 7:55 pace. Hoping to just stay with the 8:23 group, which would probably have me finish in 8:15 pace, or 1:48 overall.

Mile 5 - Screw the 8:23 pace group. Why are they running so fast? I'm going to take it easy for awhile.

Mile 6 - Where the heck is the 6.55 mile turnaround point, we should have seen it a long time ago?

Mile 6.55 - Halfway there in 54:40. I think that is 8:20 pace.

Miles 7-9 - Whose idea was it to only have water stops at mile 4 and 9? It's warm out here and I'm losing water gfast! I'm running with my jacket unzipped and my gloves off. Why is everyone passing me now?

Mile 9 - Walk through the water stop. I'm ready to be done.

Miles 10 -12 - This really sucks. I've got nothing in the tank. I'm not sure if it was the poor diet the night before, the dehyradtion, or what. I get hear the overly ambitious 1:55 pace group leader closing in fast. Shut up now dude, you are too happy.

Mile 12.5 - Overly ambitious 1:55 pace group leader overtakes me. I have no urge to go with him. I'm a wussy. I guess Defeat exists in this Running Thread today. I'm not breathing hard but I've got no power in my legs and it feels like cramps could start at any time. But, I started 2 minutes late so I've still got a lead on 1:55 pace group guy.

Mile 12.9 - Huge uphill. Great plan race organizers. Like I'm not tired enough already.

Mile 13.1 - TGIF (Thank Goodness It's the Finish). 1:54:20 time or something like that. Around 8:40 pace. At least my chip time is better than obnoxious 1:55 pace group guy (who was running alone by the end).

Finish area - Great idea to give us full water bottles on the course but then to have 3 ounce pours of water at the finish. Really, I'm not thirsty, it's okay.

11:30AM - In the shower at the YMCA. Pretty sure I could stand in here for the next 2 weeks. I could care less than a bunch of old shriveled guys are looking at me.

12:05 - Time for the Peep Meet. I've gone from feeling letdown about my performance to feeling great than I ran a 1/2 marathon. Give me a beer!

No pics during the race but here are a few of the Peep Meet.

Great reporting JG!!! Excellent job I couldn't run 13.1 miles (let alone in less than 2 hours) if I were being chased by a mob of psycho-killers in hockey masks I'd be a gonner What better reward than some beer and a peep meet!!

And great job Kalli- can't wait for your report

My first race! 1/23/2010

The Securian Frozen 5k

As JG said... we woke up to a sheet of ice everywhere. I too was worried about what the race course would be like. I was glad to see that since it was so warm the salt was doing a great job of melting the ice on the roads. It wasn't really raining down in St. Paul, thank goodness. Just some sprinkles here and there, mainly at the beginning.

9:15 The horn blows and we're off! I finally cross the line and catch the clock ... it says 00:30 The girls I'm running with start bobbing and weaving thru the crowd and I think... um no, I'm not burning all that energy right off the bat! So I let them go.

Four blocks into the course we start going down this steep hill... oh crap I'm going to have to come back up this... don't think about it now!

9:26 I hit the 1 mile mark

Then, it took forever for the turn around to come up!! Or at least it seemed that way.

Then coming back it was kind of a downhill view. I could see the sea of people in front of me and how faaaarrrrr I still had to go. It was definitely a mental game. No you cannot stop. Think about something other than how far there is to go. Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swiimming swiimming swiimming!

I was very happy to see and hear the "cheerleaders" towards the tailend of the race. Cow bells, high fives, smiles and cheers... they really helped.

And then the hill. Surprisingly, I actually didn't mind the hill at the end. I had to let up a little towards the top because I wanted to be able to RUN those last few blocks and across the finish line. And RUN I did!

9:51:40 I cross the finish line. Woot! 36 minutes!!!

It was so much fun. I can't wait to do it again... only FASTER!!

This gave me quite a few 'SOL's (Snort Out Louds) - especially the bolded line. The only thing that would have brought down the house is if there was a "glove & swamp" incident. I love how your grumpiness built and built. I'm the same way during some races. Then, at the end, it's -- Hey, that was great!! What a bunch of manic depressives we are!

I shouldn't have called you back or posted yesterday and made you think that I was still running but we just missed each other at the start to put the pressure on you

I always always always say that swimming line when I'm hitting the bottom of the tank!! I love Dori!!

Great job out there! So motivational to hear that you beat your time pretty significantly, and felt great at the end. It was awesome to see how smiley you were when talking about it too! That last hill is a dread to look up at from the bottom

Seeing all the runners at bar and around downtown when I got down there for the meet really gave me the itch...

GREAT job!!!

Oh and for accountability for me...out the door most of this week. I got a spin in on Thursday while here, but had early meetings the rest of the week...even this morning so this lazy ass didn't do anything. Monday I'll be back to it though.

Hope everyone has been having a great week!

Not like you want this much detail, but I had a lot of calories last night and normally get up early on race day and walk/jog around the neighborhood to "loosen things up". But, too much ice so no walk this AM. So, I brought a plastic baggie with TP with me just in case I had to lose my gloves on the course. But fortunately, I took care of it 10 minutes before race time. I'll stop now.

Yeah, I'm normally not such a whiner but today just sucked. Some days I just don't feel it, and I guess today was one of those days.

But, now I feel proud that I did it!

Exactly... w/ a crappy as you were feeling about it you could have easily said "screw it!" and turned around. But you didn't. You powered thru and finished it.

I told Alan last night that I don't think I ever want to even try to work up to half marathons... I think 10ks, 5 milers, mayyyybe a 10 miler (friend did one last fall and said it was way better than a 1/2 marathon and was still super satisfying)... but that will probably be enough for me. For now... 5ks. I was talking to a friend of a friend last night and she said "I'm registered for the Valentine's Day 5k! You should come!" Then she turns to Alan and says "You get discounted registration if you register as a couple!" Hahahahahaha.

Lovin' your commentary! Congratulations on busting it out, JG!!! I don't blame you for getting annoyed at the water situation......bummer! Why the rationing at the finish? Weird. You guys should have a dedicated beverage container (thinking large here) with your name on it....just sayin'!!!

Wooooohooooo! Congratulations on your time!!! AND, you are already signing up for another race.....that is just awesome!!

Congrats, again to the both of you!

For now... 5ks. I was talking to a friend of a friend last night and she said "I'm registered for the Valentine's Day 5k! You should come!" Then she turns to Alan and says "You get discounted registration if you register as a couple!" Hahahahahaha.
We'll see you next year for the Frozen 1/2 then.

Yeah, the water was wierd. On the course I certainly don't need a full water bottle but at the finish I really do. Also no Gatorade or anything like that on the course. I think I could have really used some carbs.

She did do great didn't she? I'm very proud of her. I was much more excited to hear about her race then talk about mine.

I love reading first time reports! Kalli did awesome! Reading these reports inspire me- I'm planning on my first 5K at the end of March. I don't expect to have as good a pace as Kalli- at this point I'll just be happy if I can run the whole thing with no walk breaks

Off to run again today. I don't expect much, as I just ran yesterday and my legs are sore. But I'll plug away and see what I can do. Also planning on upper body weights+abs later this afternoon.
