2010 Running (and more!) Thread
aWelcome to one of the happiest threads on the forum! Due to the great fun we had with our 2009 thread, we are going to have a 2010 thread as well, but we expanded it a bit this year. In addition to running, feel free to discuss other endurance sports like cycling, triathlons, etc.
So, post your goals, update us on your training progress, and post race reports (and pics if you can). We'll be here to cheer you on! Happy running/racing/whatever it is you do! Race Reports ewill's Houston 1/2 Marathon Report JG's Frozen 1/2 Marathon Report kallileigh1's Frozen 5K Report Buggirl's first ever 5K report u2 girlie's Bradley International 5K Report Kallileigh1's Blaine 5K Report JG's Apple Blossom 10K Report TJ's Dad's 1/2 Ironman kallileigh1's Doesn't Count 5K Report u2girlie's June 15th triathlon report u2girlie's Xtreme Scramble 5K race report PG's Fairmont Triathlon Report u2girlie's June 22nd triathlon report JG's Big Lake 8K Race Report fireinmn's Croixathalon Race Report Josephina's 238km Alberta Ride to Conquer Cancer Report u2girlie's June 29th triathlon report u2girlie's July 6th 100 degree triathlon report JG's Torchlight 5K race report Buggirl's August 14th 5K race report PG's Ragnar Relay Report JG's Ken Rome 5K Race Report 2010 Running (and other) Goals JG - Main goal is to run a 34:54 in my annual 5 mile race on Thanksgiving so I can beat NASCAR Jimmie Johnson's best time. Other than that, enter several races and have fun. Likely no marathons. Josephina - First 10k run March 17th, First 1/2 Marathon May 30th, 200k (124 mile) cycle ride for the Ride to Conquer Cancer end of June, Improve my swimming by taking lessons Mikey - run five seven minute miles.....On a treadmill U2girlie - Take 30 seconds off my best 5K pace, Wickham Park Cross Country Series - 5 x 2.6 mile races, Winding Trails Triathlon Series - weekly mini triathlon from June through August, Sprint Distance Triathlons - participate in at least 2, Olympic Distance Triathlon - participate in at least 1, Trail Races - complete at least 2, Ragnar (I'm so scared - LOL) Luv2Dance - Log in at least 20 miles per week. Run a 5K by June (will revisit this goal at end of February. If things look great, might make it a longer race). Run Half Marathon before end of year (aiming for a fall race). Lift 5 to 6 days a week . Lastly, switch back to eating the good stuff: fish, yogurt, almonds and all that jazz (consistently). TJordan - I would like to lose 100lbs and participate in my first half marathon (or full, not sure yet). I am also going to partipate in as many races as I can this year. Buggirl - I'll definitely take part in at least 2 5K's this summer- this one and this one. I think there might be a 5K over Memorial Day weekend- if so I'm in for that one, too. I'm hesitant to sign up for off-island races because it's so damn expensive to leave the island. I'm still working on time goals- off the top of my head I would like to finish the first race in under 35 mins. Mellidee - lose 25 pounds, cut out refined sugar and work out at least 4 days a week. I will slowly see if I've got the chops/heart for running through interval run/walks and go from there. Kallileigh1 - I will run a 5k by 3/31. I'd really like to do the frozen 5k but don't know if I can get my sissy self out there to train for it. I will lose 10 lbs before 4/22 (trip to Hawaii). I will run while on vacation. I will run my second 5k by 7/31. I will not slack on my weight training. Muscle tone and strength is important. I will run my third 5k by 12/31. That's right ... I will run three 5k's in 2010. Improving each time. Maybe if I'm progressing well by mid year I will re-evaluate and increase the third race to a 5 miler or a 10k. fireinmn - 5K this spring - Get in Gear or something in early May. St. Croix Tri with Mike...he'll swim and run, I'll ride (June). Mpls. Du (August 29). Iron Girl Du (September 26)

Many folks will post long term goals in this thread, but in order to achieve long term goals, you need to first meet short term goals. Thus, the Kick Butt Period.
As mentioned in the 2009 thread, we are going to have a, 8 week Kick Butt period from Jan 4th - February 28th. The purpose of this period is to train (and potentially diet) fairly hard core to give you a great base for the 2010 racing season. So, list your kick Kick Butt Period goals and I'll summarize them here. And try to stick to them, if you fall off the horse, don't fret, just get right back on. And remember...Pain/Fear/Defeat do not exist in this Running Thread, do they? Kick Butt Period Goals JG - Lose 10 pounds while continuing to lift weight (so I don't lose any muscle). Maintain long runs of 10+ miles. Josephina - Cycle in some form (indoor trainer, spin class, outdoor ride) twice a week, Workout core twice a week (possibly in my office during the lunch hour), Meet or exceed all my weekly running goals, Be aware of what I am eating - if I eat properly with all the planned training then weight loss is imminent! Buggirl - Run at least once/week, Complete 3 mile trail in under 30 min, Lift weights 2-3x/week, Do kick-butt cardio 2-3x/week to keep up cardio endurance PG - I'd like to meet or break my Half Marathon time (1:52) here in three weeks in the Frozen Half Marathon in St. Paul, I'd like to be able to swim continuously for one hour by the end of February. I have no measurable Kick Butt goals for cycling, aside from getting some type of time in the saddle at least 3 times a week, with one of those being a very hard interval workout, now that I'm in the power building phase of my offseason. DavidB - Run 3 times a week, bike 2. Get in shape to run with January Guy in March. U2girlie - Lose 1-2 pounds per week, Increase veggie intake, Decrease diet coke intake (hi, my name is Rebecca and I'm an addict), Run - 15 to 20 miles per week, Bike - 2 hour 15 minutes per week, Swim - 60 to 90 minutes per week TJordan - Lose 20lbs and be able to jog 3 miles non-stop. Kallileigh1 - I want to get my diet under control. Controlling my blood sugar levels will help me train more consistently and will make me feel better overall (and will help me drop lbs). I will also stick to my original goal of wanting to be able to run a 5k on the treadmill in under 32 mins. Overzealous? Maybe. I'll put in mucho miles to try to make it happen tho. fireinmn - get used to getting up a little earlier and working out. I'll be using the treadmill, spinner and free weights Luv2Dance - Log at least 20 running miles a week. 9 minute pace by end of Kick Butt Period. Lift 5 to 6 days a week. 4 sets of 20 Hanging Knee Raises by end of Kick Butt Period including Obliques Last edited by January Guy; 01-04-2010 at 08:37 AM.. |

Good morning and Happy New Year! We are all heading down to the gym today.
I'll be lifting. This is a big part of my goals for the year. I'll come back and outline specific goals. Start of a new year. ![]() Edit to add accountability for today: This will be a good way for me to come back and gauge my progression because my day at the gym was more of a "get to know you again" in respect to weight lifted. 4 sets 10 Hanging Knee Raises 4 sets 15 Reverse Triceps 4 sets 10 Bicep Curl 3 lbs. puny, I know 4 sets 15 20 lb pull downs 4 sets 10 Rope Crunches 10 lbs...lol 4 sets 15 Hammer Curls 3 lbs. and rounded it off with a happy stint in the sauna. Run tomorrow/lift................ overall, it felt good to make friends with machines and free weights....... Last edited by Luv2Dance; 01-01-2010 at 02:37 PM.. |

Happy 2010!
Kick Butt goals: Run at least once/week Complete 3 mile trail in under 30 min Lift weights 2-3x/week Do kick-butt cardio 2-3x/week to keep up cardio endurance I'll get back to you guys with some long term goals- I need to focus on the kick butt period for now ![]() Accountability: My first run of 2010- well, let's just call it a practice run ![]() Here are some things that I learned on the trail today:1) While I may not feel hungover while hanging out at home- a few glasses of wine have a big impact on my running ![]() 2) Doing lower body weights the day before my first run in several months may not have been the smartest workout organization. Ow, my butt ![]() 3) Don't attempt to run on a muddy downhill. 4) To date, the coldest weather I've run in is somewhere around 50F. I know that some of you run in negative god-know-what weather, but I don't know how you do it. It was 30F today. I didn't know my body could produce so much phlegm. What the hell am I supposed to do with it all? I know this is a gross topic, but it was seriously impeding my progress Anyhoo- that was my day. It can only get better from here! I'm just glad I actually got out there and did it. I'm serious about phlegm tips, though. I need help. So gross. |

I think our first goal for 2010 is to teach Buggirl how to hock a loogie properly while running!
![]() I'm still mulling over both my Kick Butt goals and my year-long goals, but here is what I have so far: I'd like to meet or break my Half Marathon time (1:52) here in three weeks in the Frozen Half Marathon in St. Paul. I'd like to be able to swim continuously for one hour by the end of February. I have no measurable Kick Butt goals for cycling, aside from getting some type of time in the saddle at least 3 times a week, with one of those being a very hard interval workout, now that I'm in the power building phase of my offseason. My first Category 4 race is in Mid-April, and I'd like to be in good enough form to finish top 20 in my first couple races, with my ultimate season goal of winning at least once. PS - it's 6 degrees F here right now. I'm going to gear up and muster out a frozen run here in a little bit. I'm pretty sure all the trails are iced up pretty good, so I'm just going to test it out and see how far I can go in 20 minutes, then turn around and try to beat my time home (negative splits ).Happy 2010 everyone! And here's to making ourselves better!! |

Penalty run today. After posting I was going to do a 3 mile run yesterday I didn't make it. So today I ran 5 outside. Weather 23 degrees and sunny. The last mile was full of temptation. My daughter drove by me at the 4 mile mark. I almost thought about taking the shortcut that takes the last 1/2 mile off. But I asked myself "What would JG do". Ok, he'd do another 3 mile loop. That's not going to happen. Ok "What would Erica do". Did the full 5, time was a little faster then I was hoping for. Nice run. Only pushed the 3rd mile. It's got a couple of hills in it and is against the wind. If I don't push it a little it's easy to lose 30 to 45 seconds off the pace.

If my life depending on racing as fast as possible and I could choose the temp, 23 would be pretty darn close to it. |

I did find motivation in the 09 thread and look forward to more in the 10 thread......I am more of a lifter/swimmer than a runner but will give it a shot this year.....I guess If I have to set a goal it would be to run five seven minute miles.....On a treadmill.....Not interested in trying to dodge cars/people downtown....

It was nice once out of the wind. Ran the last 2 with no gloves or headgear. Only wished I'd remembered to wear sunglasses. Fresh snow was really bright and my eyes teared up into the wind, which then froze on my cheeks. I think I'm going to try to run outside at least once a week.

I love this thread- my lungs were burning, filled with god-knows-what, my legs were crying out in pain and I had slid halfway down a hill- catching myself on some nice, thorny greenbriar I REALLY wanted to turn around and go home, thinking no one in their right mind would be out running after New Year's Eve. But I thought of you guys and kept going. My pace sucked, but I got 'er done. I'm going to try again on Sunday- no lower body workout ahead of time Thanks for the motivation, guys!
