We had some friends who had their backback stolen right out of the back seat of their car on 1st Ave & 26th, and it was a busy day... Lots of people around. These Robbers are gutsy!! |

Right in middle of day, in a LOCKED car, 20th Ave, heavily tinted windows, my backpack with all my photo gear was taken out of the rear seat. Was only away from car for 15mins and i am very careful to always lock it. Still don't know how they got it out. |

Unfortunately, in any tourist town, there are organized teams of criminals who are watching, tracking, surveilling and following potential victims. They probably planned this days in advance as soon as they saw your car's rental plate. And were watching for you to load up, then send in their buddies the second you turned the corner. Playa is no worse or better than any other big tourist hotspot. I feel safe there. |

rental cars have red license plates, different than the green regular plates, so the sticker thing might not work so well
sounds like thrifty has some bad dudes working there, these robberies sound like people with keys i got very lucky this week, as i left my keys in the door of my car, parked in front of a friend's house there they were when i got back the next morning to pick up my car

Well, sadly I have to add to the negative.
My wife was in Soriannas the other day shopping. When she went to check out she found that her wallet had been stolen from her purse. Now, its her fault for leaving her purse on the cart while she turned around. No doubt, vigilence is way ahead of 2nd place. In any case, what was surprising is that a. they made their first purchase within fifteen minutes at Walmart and b. citibank was on the phone to me within twenty minutes of the theft to report suspicious activity. Oh yeah. I guess I don't get out enought but I was shocked to find out that pin numbers don't protect your money at all !! THe good news is that all the credit cards were cancelled and we got new ones and the credit cards are picking up the tab for the fraudulent charges. All's well that ends well . . . BUT . . . I still think this is one of the safest places I've lived and I've been to quite a few countries. Cheers, |

What about cars with foreign license plates (Canadian in our case)?
We were also planning on stopping by several archeological sites on our way to Playa but now I am scared about leaving our car with our stuff in it in their parking lots (Teotihuacan and Palenque)? ![]()

Where exactly is Maya-Bel versus the site itself? |
