Robbed in Playa Del Carmen
I just wanted to give everyone a heads up on our latest experience in Playa. All of our suitcases were stolen from the trunk of our Thrifty car rental on Jan 5/10. We were parked on 1 Ave and 30th in the middle of the day, lots of people around, on our last day of our vacation. We never normally carry anything in the car, but as we were on our way to the airport we had everything out of sight in the trunk, stopped for one last stroll down 5th and upon our return found our trunk was emptied!!! The odd part is that they must have had a key because there was no forced entry, and they even closed the trunk!!!
The police were useless and said only that they cannot keep up with the crime. So lessons learned, dont leave ANYTHING in your cars. I know its just material stuff, but it was my wifes 40th Birthday New Years eve and all of our memorable pictures were lost as they stole the camera too..... not liking playa right now....... that must have been horrible! luckily you must have had purses/wallets with tickets, passports etc with you.i think the worst part was losing your camera and pics. ![]() hopefully your present feelings will pass and you'll be able to remember how great a trip it was. ![]() but for now you bet! um, is that hat from a previous trip or did they not take it?

So sorry to hear about your experience. But keep in mind, that crime is everywhere, not just in Playa. My co-worker's son was in Europe and had his backpack (used as a suitcase) stolen from him right in front of their eyes!! But they took everything, including wallet, passport, airline tickets!
Just remember the good times you had in Playa.

robbed
first let me say empathy is great but Angela can not expect us to believe she knows what turnin' the Big 4-0 is like ... the cops did a lousy job ... did you tell them right off you were on your way home? ... the culprits observed you and had support in the form of complicity from the shops or businesses nearby ... cops shrugging their shoulders does not help you or the next guy ... grilling anyone working nearby may yeild some results ... as for the sombrero, it looks great but don't wear it to work other than May 5

This is just awful.
Honestly, if that happened to me, I'd have a hard time returning to Playa.Of course the police cannot keep up with the crime, they're too busy swindling $$ out of tourists driving on 307.

This is a bummer.
![]() ![]() I would like to suggest to anyone that they email special photos back to themselves as soon as they are downloaded in case the camera/chip get lost or stolen. Those photos are the most important part of your luggage (in my mind). You can replace anything else, even the camera. |

Last year, a Mexican got my cell phone and made about $300 in long distance calls. Assume it was a Mexican based on the calls to DF, Oaxaca, Chiapas... the lucky recipients of those calls have since had to change their numbers thanks to a little help from Skype. ![]() My very last trip to Playa del Carmen (May '09 during the height of the H1N1 panic), had some idiot tried to rob me at 4am. First he demanded money and then he said he was going to take my digital SLR too. Carry mine on a wrist strap... its becomes a fabulous weapon that way. Love being underestimated...Jimmy |
