Taxi fares from Viva Maya to....
Hi folks! My first post, but I've been reading for awhile and I've been checking out the webcams for a couple of years now--love them during a cold New England winter!
I'm wondering if anyone has a clue about taxi fares. 3 of us will go to Xel Ha next month and I'm wondering if it's about the same money to take a taxi (and enter/leave when we want), or to go into PDC and pick up a bus. If anyone has any idea what it would cost to go to Xel Ha from PDC, that would probably work too, as it's only a couple miles to town from the Viva Wyndham Maya. Please don't suggest we rent a car--we're not that confident! |

Hi there! Congratulations on your upcoming trip. We did this exact trip from the Tucan which is about 3-4 resorts down from the Maya. Cost us $45 each way. Another time we took the bus and although I cant remember the cost is was very cheap in comparison. We were a family of four so we didn't have the luxury of splitting the fare. If you can split your cost with someone than I would definately go taxi for the convenience.

A Colectivo is definately the cheapest way but not overly convenient. Depends on what is most important. If I were to do Xel HA again I would use the Colectivo as long as I didn't have the little ones with me. The other thing to be aware of is that the drop off at the entrance to Xel Ha on 307 is a pretty good walk in from the highway. If this is a physical concern at all or you will be there during the really hot months, I would take that into consideration. Lots of options.

Thanks for the info--hm...$45 each way. If it costs me $5 to get into PDC from my resort, and the tour bus adds $20 each person for the round trip....that's $70 if we take the bus, or $90 if we take the taxi.
When I say "the bus", I'm thinking that if we go to the bus station in PDC, we can get on a day-tour bus (figured I'd scope it out a day or so beforehand). We arranged the round trip bus thing last year thru American Express, and it was $95 per person. We had to walk to the plaza across the street from Viva Maya to get the bus. The collectivo won't work, as my husband has some trouble walking...more so when he's tired, but thanks for that suggestion. |

The $95 got us the bus and the entrance last year. Entrance fee WAS $75, I see it's gone up to almost $80 now, BUT if we go the taxi route, I can buy the tix online for $71.10....saving a bunch that I can "apply" toward the taxi fee. I found the taxi rates from PDC to Xel Ha, and if accurate, it's 369 pesos each way. If this works out, we'll get there earlier and leave later than we can if we take the bus. The bus picked us up around 8:30, made a bunch of stops and got there around 10:00am...and we had to be back in the parking lot at 4:30-4:45 because the bus left at 5pm.
I've almost convinced myself to take the taxi--chime in if you see the flaw in my plan. |
