Wow. I did not think this thread would get legs.
Personally, I think the Dixie Chicks music sucks. I hate pre packaged faux country. I also think that they can say whatever they want. Contrary to what Thor is saying, I think it is healthy for freedom of speech when more people are able to use theirs. In this case, the Chicks did not have the talent to withstand the backlash.
There are many artists who have said much worse about Bush, and continued to succeed. I am in the record store on the day that REM, Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams CDs come out. Springsteen, Neil Young, Stresiand, etc. all speak out on a regular basis. They survive because they have earned the respect of the music listening world. The Dixie Chicks might want to consider that a lot of people, like me, were never going to buy their CD to begin with.
I started this thread because I saw a movie trailer on TV. I guess they have made a documentary on the trials and tribulations they have been through since that day in London. Poor, poor girls. Millions of people heard them speak and then gave them the collective shaft. Freedom of speech at its best. Liberals and conservatives use boycotts. They are an effective political tool and a valid expression of disapproval. The idea that there was a conspiracy (which is what they are claiming) is laughable, and shows you just how out seriously they take themselves. The idea being that they are so important to the world that Bush needed to silence them. Give me a friggin break.
Excuse me, I am going to listen to some Billy Bragg and Wilco covering Woody Guthrie songs.
