Read the forum and trip reports ...you'll get your answer And think twice about The Reef Oh...and we can have crowds here - that's what happens when a place becomes hugely popular |

Cancun is just like staying in Miami. Playa is Heaven..If you have to do an all inclusive the Riu resorts were always nice when I was a Playa infant. Now that I'm all grown up Downtown Motels and Condos are the way to immerse yourself in the TRUE Playa |

I would compare Cancun to New York City during rush hour. If you are young and are looking for some wild party bars and techno nightclubs, go to Cancun.I forget how many million people live in Cancun for being such a small area, but If you want a nice relaxing , kick-back vacation to get away from the hustle and bustle then come to Playa or go even farther South.
as for the Reef I haven't heard much that was good , search some messages boards for trip reviews including this one |

We have a beautiful beachfront unit in Cancun and have enjoyed it for many years.Cancun is a vibrant bustling semi metropolitan area with great beaches and loads of good restaurants. It is probably on par with many aspects of Miami as a vacation destination. Many folks who are leery of local cuisine are very pleased with the abundance of Americanized and chain restaurants.
We first visited PDC about 4 years ago and initially were apprehensive as we ventured in along the highway-it is much more local and authentic (you can see that in Cancun as well but not in the hotel zone where most folks stay) We are completely taken with the flavor (literally and figuratively) of Playa.Last year we did a week in Playa and then went (kicking and screaming)to Cancun for our second week. This year we rented our unit so we can stay the whole time in Playa.I hear people at the Haciendas who are used to Cancun and rue their choice of coming to Playa. Obviously the folks here are generally pretty biased towards Playa but I can see where folks who were not as adventurous or willing to sample local culture would be happier in Cancun( or staying at an AI to keep some distance) Personally I can't imagine spending a week again in Cancun but millions of folks due quite happily. I trust I've added to your confusion sufficiently

Cozumel Airport
We have decided this year to avoid Cancun COMPLETELY!!!! We are flying into Cozumel and aboarding the ferry for a short and beautiful trip across the caribbean sea to Playa. I have always wanted to do this and I am very excited about it.

Add one more vote for Playa. I had been to Cancun 3 times before I found Playa. CancunI think was better in the 90's... It is way too busy for me now. We found Playa 2 years ago and have been twice and are actually thinking of retiring there.

Hey I see you're from Tallmadge, we're from Strongsville. We went to Playa last year, stayed at Playa Maya, small boutique hotel on the beach and loved it. As you can see by our counter we're going this week and can't wait, beautiful town. Foods great and inexpensive, so are drinks. Cancun is just too commercialized, when we want that we go to Vegas.
