Kat and Sue do Playa in the middle of February, 2010
February 9, 2010
(Warning: There are no photos from this day – latter days will have LOTS of photos, however.) Ugh, does anyone really want to know about the flight? I always skip the flight sections on other trip reports. Flights and airports already suck, right? Why would you want to read about them? I arrived at the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport at the ungodly hour of 4 AM, my flight was delayed, the second leg from Chicago was also delayed, and I ended up arriving in Cancun an hour late. Luckily, my friend Judy was still waiting for me at the ADO pickup spot (thanks, Judy), so I was able to chat with her on the bus ride to Playa. As soon as I was rid of my stuff and into my swim suit, I went to Bad Boys. It was about 3:30 PM by then. The weather was partly cloudy and cool. Screw it, I sprawled out on a lounger anyway and ordered a bucket of Sols. I drank and lounged and watched the sun fall behind the hotels. My first thought on being in Playa was that it seemed really quiet for February. I had never been down there at that time before and I expected it to be much busier than in June, when I normally visit. At any rate, I was through with four of my beers by the time Judy showed up. She was like, “Where is MY beer?” I was like, “Um, up at the bar?” I grabbed my last bottle and we headed to the bar for a bit, so Judy could hook up with some old friends. Oh, I’ll mention here now that I was never charged for a lounger or umbrella, any of the times that I was at Bad Boys this trip. I ate at Pizza Renzo with my friend/sister Anna for dinner. I love Renzo. I don’t like Pizza Pazza much at all. Even after I’ve been drinking! ![]() I got to meet Lenny for the first time. He is the small, fuzzy embodiment of pure joy (as long as there is a ball around). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I went to Jan’s birthday party at Jurgen’s bar up in Mom’s Hotel that night. It was fun until all of the guys separated from us in order to play poker, and they all started drinking tequila shots without sharing with us – without even sharing with the birthday girl!!!! ![]() Stupid boys! (OK, OK, we ended up getting shots, after we BEGGED. )I spent that night at Anna’s condo, which is BEAUTIFUL. More beautiful, in fact, than most hotels I’ve ever stayed at. OK, this is a really, really boring start. I promise you that it will get better. Trust me, OK?

February 10, 2010
I woke up early in the morning and Anna was already gone to work. But my other roommate greeted me: Rosie ![]() ![]() I spent the day wandering around looking for something to do. I was going to meet Vieve at the Shangri La later, and so I didn’t want to get too comfortable anywhere, so I just walked and walked and walked. In the mean time, I got a HUGE blister on my foot from my stupid flip flops. ![]() Finally, Vieve and I got to spend some time on the beach at the Shangri La. But, oops, it isn’t the Shangri La anymore, it’s the Mahekal? Is that correct? At any rate, the day was a bit cloudy and cool, but the two of us had a nice time chatting and getting to know one another and having drinks. Vieve then drove me to Anna’s, where I gathered my things. It is so cute to see Rosie and Anna together. Rosie loves her mamma so much. ![]() Then it was time to check into Las Palmas condos and finally hook up with Kat! We shared a two-bedroom unit on the top floor of the building. It was not anything super fancy, but it was really comfortable and provided everything we needed. Except for one thing: hot water. The hot water situation SUCKED. You’d turn on the shower and it would be piping hot and then the hot water would disappear completely. Since the weather really wasn’t all that warm the whole week, not having hot showers was kind of a drag. But I still really enjoyed staying there. We had maid service every other day, a ton of bath towels and more than enough beach towels. It was really nice not having to pack a beach towel. These photos were taken at later dates but since I’m telling you about the place now, I’ll show them to you now:The living room and dining room were basically one large area, with a kitchen looking into the dining room section. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here's my room, which is the "second" bedroom. Kat's had a king size bed and an ensuite bathroom. ![]() ![]() The rooftop area was cool, with an outdoor kitchen area and several loungers and a pool. Sadly, it was too cold most of the time for the pool, which was unheated (the sun was never strong enough to warm it up). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'll continue this day in a bit. January 10, 2010 (continued)
After we threw our stuff in our rooms, Kat and I went around the corner for slices from Pizza Renzo (again! ), and then we went to Luna Blue for drinks. Kat had her first shot of tequila. It was an expensive one too. $100 (pesos) for a shot of Don Julio! ![]() It turned into a pretty fun night, as Vieve and Jez and Rick and Lenny and Jan and Eric and Andy and Jen all came down. (Boy, that Lenny sure is cute! )Some of us went to El Fogon for dinner that night. I had chicken quesadillas, which were delicious. I ended up taking some back to the condo and heating them up a couple of days later on a skillet, and they were just as good then, too. After dinner, Kat and I went to Bip Bip to find an old friend of mine, Negro. I hadn’t seen him in eight years, but he knew who I was right away! Here is a photo of him: Negro ![]() We meet Vieve again and went to El Bar for a bit and watched an interesting band, and then we had one last drink at La Rana. We finally hit our beds at around 2 AM (I think ![]() ).
