Help us help the dogs at the perrera March 3rd Food Drive
Paw favor comida de canina
Malix pek, Peanut pet shelter and Coco’s Cat Rescue are working together to improve the conditions for the dogs at the perrera. We need your help! The Immediate Needs: * Dog Food is needed to feed the dogs at the pererra!!!!!!! *Malix Pek will also be raising money to repair a section of kennels at the pererra. The municipality has agreed to allow this section of the pererra to be used for adoptable pets if we can repair the gates to the broken kennels! More info on this at a later date. Malix Pek has been working for some time with the municipality to improve the conditions for dogs in Playa del Carmen. The municipality has formally asked Malix Pek for their help. Mailx Pek in turn, brought together other local animal organizations (Peanuts and Coco’s) to increase awareness and networking. The Municipality has the unfortunate job of trying to control irresponsible pet ownership, dog over population problems and animal cruelty cases. It is against the law to have your dog running loose in Playa. It poses a health risk for humans and other animals alike. Their job is to gather dogs on the street and take them to the holding area at the pererra. The pet owners have 72 hours to retrieve their pet with a fine. If no one claims the dog, the sad truth is that they will be put to sleep. Malix Pek has also experienced the pererra responding to animal cruelty cases. When notified of cruelty or neglect, the representative will first talk with the owner giving them a warning and explaining proper care, they return in a week to assess the situation. If the owners have not improved the conditions, the dog is taken from them. After the municipality welcomed support and help, Malix Pek, Peanut pet Shelter and Coco’s Cat Rescue were invited to visit the perrera to meet the new Municipal Vet Carlos. He gave a tour of the pererra and was very open to ideas and suggestions. The facility was actually very clean. The dogs all had fresh water but Carlos was honest about the dogs being fed a small amount of food every other day. The municipality and the vet are very interested in improving the conditions but the truth is that it is hard and a long process to fight for funding for the Pererra. If we want any improvement we are going to have start with local donations. With some help, in the future maybe a better program can be implemented. This takes time and a lot of effort. This is just the beginning. The day of the tour some GOOD NEWS is that Peanut Pet Shelter and Malix Pek were able to take a few of the dogs that were going to be put to sleep. A few sad faces were given a second chance that day. There are many other days with not such good news and many sweet faces that don’t make it. Malix Pek has been involved with the pererra for some time now and have reported that all dogs that have had to be Euthanized have been done so, humanely! No horror stories, just sad that it has to happen at all. Both the municipal vet Carlos and the Municipality would like for this humane procedure to continue. This brings a new issue to the table. A NEW concern that is approaching quickly: The affordable drug used to safely and humanly put the dogs to sleep has recently been deemed illegal. EVERYONE is greatly concerned about this. It will be very expensive to use a different type of drug to continue the humane Euthanasia. For the time being, Peanuts Pet Shelter managed to locate some of the needed drug. Together with the municipal vet we are trying to find a solution! Help us to continue to educate the community about Pet Sterilization. Be a part of the solution not the problem. Peanut Pet shelter and Coco’s Cat Rescue have temporarily been able to donate some much needed food but this will not last very long. Please join us! These angels with fur need our help! We will be holding a food drive as this is the most urgent need. These dogs that are not so fortunate to have a loving home do not need to suffer further before their demise. Please join us On Wednesday 3rd March at PG’s(26th street with 1st av) from 7.30pm. Please bring whatever you can even if it’s one can of food! If you can’t make it Wednesday evening then please pass by during the day and drop off the food with Chris. If you would like to help deliver or help in the repair of the kennel doors, please contact Carlotta-carlottacavadini@gmail.com |

For this reason, Chris will be taking charge of any cash donations and all Paypal donations will go via Cathy Heard (heardling) We will give further details once all the arrangements have been sorted with all parties. Andy and Chris from PG have been making the arrangements for the food drive and Carrie from PG is working on the poster Andy has designed as we speak. We (and I speak on behalf of Malix Pek and Coco's too as per our conversations and emails) wish to make it clear that this is not about any of us. This is about making life easier for animals who have no food. Please can I ask everyone to refrain from the 'Yay for you' comments at this stage as the 'Yay for you" needs to be directed to the people kind enough to donate food, and our gracious hosts at PG's, not those of us (PPS included) who have only needed to have minimum input. I apologize if I seem rude or abrupt in any way, this is certainly not my intention, I solely hoped that we could finish making arrangements before the announcement. Jen |

. But we can help spread the word that la perrera dogs and PPS dogs and Coco's cats CAN be given another chance, if we all unite and help, and this event on march 3rd could be a huge occasion to raise conciences and help, in one way or another. |
