Shanghai Chinese Restaurant

So on Sunday we decided to trek up to Berman and Berman's for some of those delicious wraps we've been hearing about. We walked up but thought we might have the wrong address as we couldnt find it. We came to find out later that its (Berman and Bermans) closed on Sundays and they have no signage out front so you would easily miss it.

We finally gave up and began to wander back toward 5th. We were on 10th heading back when we saw The Shanghai Chinese restaurant. We were somewhat surprised to see a Chinese restaurant in Playa but then rethought it and figured it wasnt as far out as we initially thought.

We decided to venture in and check out the menu. We were promptly greeted by Fanny Wang who had a pleasant smile, large painted on eyebrows and a thick accent. We have tried so many hole in the wall places that were great in the past that we decided to give this odd place a try. Upon entering we noticed that the place was kind of a mess and pretty dirty. We blew it off thinking that since its a "hole in the wall" place, it makes sense. We were then seated and given menu's.

At this point Tina decides she needs to use the bathroom. She gets up and goes over to the bano, opens the door hesitantly and peeks inside....then hurries back and sits down. I asked what was wrong and she says that she thinks they may be filming a scene from Saw VII in the bathroom later today and that she could "hold it".

Coca Light was only 10 pesos so that was good and the rest of the menu was reasonably priced. They had a "to go, fast food" buffet set up and you could get a scoop of whatever you wanted for 10 pesos, once again, a good price. Tina ordered a combination plate and I ordered the sweet and sour chicken. We got our plates and they looked pretty good but the food quality was less that desirable...matter of fact I dont think my chicken was even chicken. I shudder to think of what it might have been but it was pretty much inedible. Tina's Lo Mien was decent but the rest was not good.

Overall, bad experience and there is no way I could recommend anyone going to eat at this place. I have pictures I can post later but take my word for it and avoid this place.

i have to disagree
i know fanny and jack and also know what to order when i go there
they make all their own noodles and also the sprouts for the chop suey
if you order well, you can get nice food at this restaurant
they opened the first chinese restaurant in playa many many years ago
i like the food there
another plus: beer is cheap, too

Could be...could be that we just ordered the wrong food but the places I suggest to people who want to know where to eat in Playa dont generally have food that is inedible. I've never had a bad meal at Babes, HC, El Fogon, ect...Personally I wouldnt suggest a place with the caveat that you can only order one item because thats all they do well.

Either way, you think its good and thats great, our meal was terrible. People can take that for what its worth I guess.

sorry you had a bad meal, friend
when fanny was making chop suey back in the day with fresh bean sprouts it was a real treat
they were making fresh noodles every day, too, way before the foodies invaded playa
they are a really wonderful family, have been in bidness a long time
i guess some people like the food

i'm not sure i would go to HC even if someone invited me there
i would take them to a better place that would cost them less
fogon is a nice little restaurant, but there is nothing there that you can't get better somewhere else
etc, etc

to each his own
i have have bad meals at good restaurants
and good meals at bad restaurants, too

When I Rome, I eat Italian.

When I Playa, I tend to eat Mexican. There are a few other places I like in Playa that serve various ethnic foods, but... My "comfort" foods in Playa are places like HC, El Fogon, the taco stands, Tacos Gomez, etc.

Thousands of world class asian restaurants in Houston...

Here are the pictures I promised!

Ok now to the food! This first picture was of Tina's combination plate. The Lo Mien was ok but the rest wasnt very good at all. The rice? Well how can you screw up rice unless your name is Babaloo, you just moved to Playa and you have a hot plate!

Now to my plate which was sweet and sour chicken. It just did not taste at all like chicken and the sauce had a nasty flavor IMO. I literally ate maybe 3 pieces and couldnt eat anymore.

Just above my plate you can see the won tons we ordered. They were the best thing I had there but even those paled in comparison to ones I've had elsewhere.

This next picture is of their "to go" "fast food" bar. It seems like a pretty good idea and the price was like 10 pesos a scoop so you cant argue with the price. As far as the food quality, I have no idea but if its anything like what we had then I'd avoid it.

Heres a picture of their card, it has all the info you'd need if you wanted to try it for yourself. I will say that Fanny seemed like a very nice woman and was an attentive host and server.

I'll second that.

I will be back this week for my traditional take out food. I always order the same thing. Real Chinese food cooked by real Chinese. We don't have that in California.
