Mexico February 2010
Saturday February 13th Cancun
Leaving this: ![]() Haven't been to Mexico since 2007 and were so excited to return! Arrived in Cancun at 6:00 PM with no real hassles, just an hour long wait to get through immigration, and customs was a breeze. Our transfer was waiting for us-wait, where’s my jacket!? Brrrr! Never have arrived and been chilly. I grab a coulpa $6 Modelos and we are off to the hotel in our transfer. Now this trip is a little different for us…usually we are headed straight to Playa, but this year Josh’s parents gave us 4 nights in a hotel in Cancun, so that’s where we are headed first, then Playa for the next 9 nights! We plan to do some sight seeing when we are in Cancun- Chichen Itza, Valladolid and Cenote Dizitnip. We arrive and are oriented to our hotel and quickly on the hunt for tacos. First cross the street to the OXXO and grab dos mas cervesas. This time they are 14 pesos. Much better than 6 dollars!! Good to have an OXXO right across the street. There is nothing really close to the hotel that we can see, but it’s dark too. I already miss Playa as we have to get on a bus to go get any food. There is a restaurant at the hotel, but it’s $$$ and I just really want a couple of tacos. I asked the concierge about tacos and he gets a card out and says go here. It is a card for La Parilla! No, I don’t want anything touristy…he looks at me with a blank stare…well you are in Cancun lady, it is touristy. ![]() Ok then, we are gonna brave it on our own so off we go. Bus stop was only 30 meters from our hotel, and one was along in 5 minutes. We board the bus, pay the 15 pesos for two, and immediately turn to Josh and say HOLD ON! Good thing cause if not a second later we both woulda been on the floor. They step on it immediately. Good tip from the mapchick! The restaurant La Habichuela is in the back of my mind from a recommendation from Gingele and I am eager to try, but just want tacos and a shot of tequila. We opt for the latter since we are a bit grubby from the trip and save the nice restaurant for another night. We get dropped off downtown near the Municipal and I am in awe…there are lots of pots, pots of tamales that is, everywhere, well, not EVERYwhere, but it seems so to me cause I am hunry. I look at Josh and point…You know what’s in THERE don’t you!? Tama---- Whoa! Are you ok? I was about to say Tamales, but when I distracted Josh by pointing and awing, he had stepped in a hole, not a huge wide hole, just enough for his foot to fit in there and his leg drop in it all the way down to his knee and get pinched!! OUCH! He is ok thank goodness. I look at his leg and the hole and then realize he could have broken his foot, his ankle, his knee. Yikes! Better pay attention where we are going, sidewalks are all jacked up here. Anyway, after this we are heckled by our first vendor…”Hey lady you want braids?” Smile, ah we are in Mexico. Side note: I have never been much of a tequila fan, and decide this year I am gonna try and like it (straight). I can enjoy a marg, but I want to try different flavors. First shot is Don Julio reposado. It is very salty to me…Josh gets the Don Julio anejo and it tasted salty and peppery to me. Both of them were to me were bleccch. But I wouldn't feel that way for long! ![]() ![]() ![]() We order tacos…1 Arrachera and 1 tacolote (aracherra, cheese, bacon, peppers and onion) for me and Chicken tacos with some refried for Josh. They were all really good! I remember thinking are these really good, or am I just starving? I think they were really good and only 23 pesos a piece-pretty good for Cancun. ![]() ![]() I want another shot before we leave, so I try Herradura. I remember Diogeron telling me it meant horse shoe in Spanish, so of course I need to try one for the simple fact that I am a Colts fan! No pic of this one, but hey, I like this one a little better. It still gives me the stick eye, and isn’t purely enjoyable, but I must say it is a fun buzz.Oh, yea. Remember we are in Cancun right? Well the waiter came over and stuck these on our heads….aihyayaah. ![]() There is a man that starts singing while we are there, and he is very good. Cute too. I took a pic, but it didn’t come out well. Sorry ladies. ![]() We are off and go exploring a little. Watch out for the holes!! We see La Habichuela and walk inside to take a peek. The garden in the back is very charming and beautiful. The menu looks nice too. Smells wonderful!! We must return Off to another bar. There are not many people out really cause it’s probably in the low 60’s We have a beer at another bar and decide to call it a night. Now THAT’s a little different than our normal plan too, but maybe we are growing up! HAHA!

If it the one I am thinking of, I believe it is distributed out of Guadalajara. Tried it in November and wow... really liked it. |

I must confess Chris, I think I spotted you on 5th one evening. It was late and I was busy stuffing my face with goodies from Ah Cacao, but I believe you were hugging someone goodbye and then headed back the other direction with your hubby. I could be wrong, but you both looked like familiar faces. Once again, I spent an entire week in Playa and didn't hit up any Peep Meets or real peep hotspots, but I also realized that I don't think I'm very good at recognizing peeps on the streets. With all of the peeps in Playa this town of year, you would certainly think I would bump into someone, but I didn't recognize a soul!
Great start to your report! Can't wait to see the rest! |
