How I Lost 9 Days In Playa- A Drinkumentary
DISCLAIMER: This is my first trip report and it is in no way meant to hurt or offend anyone. None of the names have been changed, therefore not protecting the guilty. It is meant to be a lighthearted look on our recent trip to Playa Del Carmen on Feb.10-19. That being said here we go....Cheers "I never drink water; that is the stuff that rusts pipes. What contemptible scoundrel has stolen the cork to my lunch?" W.C. Fields Feb. 10, 2010-Day 1: ![]() I can’t wait to start drinking! The anticipation has been building for 36 hours through many layovers and flights, but we have finally arrived in Cancun. The immigration and customs lines seem to be much faster and shorter this time, our 4th time to Playa. Our luggage comes through without a hitch and we are quickly out the door of the airport meeting our waiting private shuttle driver Mauricio de la Serna Garcia. He offers a friendly, courteous, and professional service and is fluent in about 5 languages which include Spanish, English, French, Italian, and Portugese. If you are ever in need of his services, he can be reached at morrys_vips_svcs@hotmail.com . As always, be sure to ask for his prices up front. He whisks us off and soon stops at the first convenience store to pick up a 6 pack of Superior. The journey begins as I take a big gulp off the supposed “ICE COLD” cerveza. I guess his ice cold is my luke warm. But who am I to complain, it is beer and I am on vacation in Mexico. After two more each, my wife Tina, (Palomalover) and myself arrive at the Playa Palms in Playa Del Carmen. Our host Victor checks us in and Carlos packs our two 50+ pound suitcases to our 3rd floor room. He explains while wiping the sweat off his brow that there is a mini-bar in the mini-fridge. I quickly tip him and run to the fridge, releasing two cold (luke warm again) Sols from their captivity. We quickly change out of our Montana clothes and slip into beach gear. Another Sol is taken from the fridge and we make our way to the beach and the Playa Palms webcam to wave to our friends back home, holding up our cervezas showing the world the universal, I am drinking on vacation and you’re not salute. It is time to head down the beach to a beach club. ![]() Dean (Montana SolMan) and Tina (Palomalover) Our first stop is the Bad Boys Beach Bar where Hector rushes out and offers us a table and an ice cold bucket of Sol. We accept the offer and he quickly brings us the bucket filled with 5 Sols surrounded by ice. I am still amazed at how beer sitting in ice in Mexico still does not seem that cold. We finish the bucket and decide it is time to move on to another drinking establishment. We make our way up to the busy 5th Ave. and stroll past a few bars to the famous Tequila Barrel. We take a table off the street next to the bar where we can enjoy our drink and people watch. We order my wife’s favorite drink, a paloma, made with tequila, fresco/squirt, and lime. It is delicious and we quickly empty our glasses. Laura then serves us many more over the next couple hours. I am quickly losing track of time and notice the more I drink the more I seem to laugh at and make fun of the street walkers. Before leaving we order a shot of Classic Azul tequila on the rocks because as they say, when in Mexico-drink tequila. We pay our tab and decide after 36 hours of not much rest we should get closer to home as we still have 8 full days left. On our walk towards our destination, we pass several bars where I know many people are laughing at me stumbling down 5th. It does not bother me as they have no idea of the importance of the research I am doing for this trip report. ![]() Nice Flagpole ![]() ![]() Tequila Barrel My wife informs me that it is time to turn down calle 12 which is the street to our hotel. I find it very odd that I can no longer read the street signs. I must have developed a case of night blindness. It could have absolutely nothing do with my consumption today. We make it to 1st Ave., and I suggest one more stop before going home, The Dirty Martini between calle 10 and calle 12. I remind my wife we have to stop as I have read that this bar is the "perfect respite for the mature martini connoisseur" and that is exactly who I am at this moment. I can feel the brilliance and sophistication flowing through my brain as I stumble on the steps at the entrance. That 1st step looked much smaller before I lifted my foot to meet it. The bartender Cynthia asks what we would like to have. My attempt at looking suave and worldly fails as I look at the menu with my glasses cocked sideways on my head. I decide on a tequilini which has 1800 Anejo, grand marnier, and lime juice. It is at this point that a group of elderly, mature people approach my wife Tina, and tells her how much she looks like Sarah Palin. Then Karen Lange, one of the wonderful owners of The Dirty Martini approaches us inquiring as to where we are from. It is now that I explain to her the nature of our trip and the drunkumentary. Yes it started out as a drinkumentary but I am way past that point. I highly recommend this stop for a nightcap or just nice cold one to sip on during the day. The music has a nice casual lounge feel to it and the atmosphere is very relaxing. The drinks were very good and it is at this point that brilliance and sophistication swiftly left my body . Okay, it probably never entered. Lucky for me my wonderful wife speaks fluent “drunkineese” as that is all I was speaking at this point. She carefully guided me back to our room which was only a couple blocks away, reminding me that I do not have to put so much into my research. As I mumble, "Yes I do" I can hear her say, "Thank God, day 1 is over." Stay tuned for day 2!!! ![]() Cynthia from The Dirty Martini ![]() Palomalover and Karen Lange( One of the ownwers of the Dirty Martini) ![]() Menu from the Dirty Martini ![]() My eyes are showing the brilliance and sophistication Ha Ha ![]() What a great little bar. Thanks for the fun Karen and staff!! Don't change this channel. There is still 8 days to go.....
