I would have done just what you did. If she had issues with your department she should have had a private meeting with you beforehand. |

I agree with the majority of the posts.
She was a jerk to say what she said in an open meeting like that. And I give major kudos to you for taking the time to step out and calm down before you addressed it. If you hadn't had staff members present, it might've been a different scenario (one of those "why stoop to her level" kind of things). But I see it that you were right to address it face-to-face so your staff could see you sticking up for them and your department as a whole. As long as you didn't jeopardize your job (which apparently you didn't, judging from your boss's reaction), then I think you were spot on. ![]()

Nobody has issues with my department.
Everybody is happy with us, but I did disagree with a Division Dean at a meeting yesterday in front of a group that included a campus president and other people. But, in academia that is kind of expected, and as long as you make a good case, it is good. A second division dean ended up agreeing with me ![]() I would not hesitate to take on Horizon if I thought he was wrong, but based on his record here, I'd hesitate plenty to do that. He is smart and has a pretty wife and strong young men as kids. I want him on my side. |

An organization I volunteer for has mandated another dumb-a$$ rule starting next week. It's the typical rule that is created by people who don't actually do the work. I replied in an email about their new rule. I sent it to my immediate supervisor at this organization I volunteer for. The email I sent to her was not at her but at her superiors. I went into details about what was wrong with the new rule, and how people at my level would circumvent this rule, and I finished it by saying that if they didn't like it they could 'F off and find someone to replace me.
So today I spoke with my supervisor at this organization and she stated she forwarded the email to them, but removed the last line. She didn't want me to leave or have my volunteer status be removed. Nothing wrong with a good boss. And she agreed with me. Now you know why I'm not allowed at meetings. I think Horizon handled it perfectly. I would have been fired. |
