The article was posted yesterday at 3am, I'm guessing it must have also happened yesterday or perhaps on the 15th....

Sad situation. Cartel battles are ruining a great town

I recently got home to Playa from a two week+ trip through central Mexico. I spent 5 days in Coyoacan, Mexico City, then on to Celaya, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Leon and spent the day/last night in Silao before flying out of BJX (Leon/Guanajuato) Airport direct to Cancun. At least several of the towns are not gringo tourist destinations at all. I would say that I wandered (walked) at least 10 miles in each of these towns, except Silao. Never saw any problems or encountered any situation in which I felt in danger. I traveled alone.
I had such a great eye opening time that in a few months I am planning a trip in which I will fly into BJX and pick up my trip where I left off. This time I am planning on going to Tupataro, Irapauto, Guanajuato, Leon, Aquascaliente, Zacatecas and finally onto Guadalajara and eventually fly back to Cancun from GDL (2 to 3 week trip).
Two weeks before my next trip I am flying to Fort Lauderdale and on to Boca Raton, FL. I am betting I will be safer on my trip within Mexico than I will be in Fort Lauderdale, but Boca is pretty safe IF you watch out for those crazy older drivers

If you think that Playa is unsafe, GO TO MIAMI BEACH or elsewhere.

As far as Playa: Playa is a growing town of 250,000 or so people. Check the average U.S. cities with similar population statistics and see how many murders there are in these towns.

To stevebalt: Baltimore (my hometown) has had 100+ homicides since February 1, 2017. My brother (he lives in Arlington, VA) emailed me an article that appeared recently in the Baltimore Sun about the horrible situation (homicide wise) in Baltimore. You keep talking about cartels. Yes they are here with their turf wars. In Baltimore, as elsewhere, they are called GANGS with their GANGBANGERS.
The thing about gangbangers is that their aim is terrible and they end up shooting many innocent bystanders.
Just don't come to Playa and/or Mexico. Go to Boca. You will feel safe. That is, if you don't drive

Please put things in perspective for us. When were you last in Playa? For how long?

Excellent post and ditto to Miami Beach. We'll be down in Playa in early June for a couple of weeks for the umpteenth time and have absolutely no safety concerns, either on 5th or well off the tourist trail. I live in nice, white bread, upscale Long Island and yet 4 people were killed in a gang shootout not 20 miles from my home a month ago. There is a 5th Ave (Quinta) in Bayshore, LI, and you wouldn't catch me there in a million years. Stuff happens everywhere, you gotta live your life and take sensible precautions.

I grew up and lived in Detroit for a little over 30 years. I had my car stolen at gunpoint, my wallet stolen with a knife to my throat, my house broken into, my garage broken into, etc., etc. The worst thing that ever happened in Playa (we spend a couple months a year there) was a few weeks ago some punk on Juarez tried to knock me off me feet by shouldering me (it didn't work).
